Car: 1992 Firebird
Engine: forged 357
Transmission: 700r4, 2200-2400 stall, vette servo
Axle/Gears: stock pegleg 2.73 drum (temp)
Do I need hardened pushrods?
I have guideplates with 1.6" roller rockers. Also, what size? Thanks.

Axle/Gears: need 3.73
Yes if you are using guideplates. No if you are using S/A rockers but I would still get them. 5/16 are the diameter size (stock).

Unless you've gone to a big roller cam with heavy valve springs, 5/16" pushrods will be fine. Any brand with a .080" wall thickness will do but I suggest using Comp Cams pushrods. You'll also need to buy one of their pushrod length checkers to know the exact length of the pushrods before buying any. Many times stock length is fine but if you've done a cam or head swap, the pushrod length needs to be checked.

With guideplates and/or a higher lift cam, yes. If you're using stock heads you should be able to use the stock length, or if you're replacing a setup that is already proven to have correct geometry buy the same length. Otherwise use a pushrod checker to determine what length you need. Be aware that you can't use self-aligning rockers with guideplates, if you weren't aware of that already. I bought the Trick Flow hardened pushrods after bending some stock replacement ones and had no problems since.

How do I tell if the pushrods I have are hardened? Any way? I don't remember what he said- package deal didn't really care about them at the time. I have non SA rockers and guideplates.

Tell me the differance between the push rod running through a guide plate and the stock pushrod holes in some heads. I think most pushrods are "hardened". I would be more concerned about getting the geometry right.
