close to 400 HP for a 305? Check this e-mail out from AFR...

Hey guys, i e-mailed AFR about using their 180cc heads on my stock 305 TPI. This is what they said, exact quote.

"Tieh a cam and head change you could see a gain of about 60 to 75 horse
power. I would suggest the comp cam XR264HR to use eith your combination.
With headers, hi-flow, mufflers, camshaft, and heads you should get near
400 hp."

So with the heads and cam, 60 horses? my stock LB9 has 190HP (i also included that in the e-mail to them). That makes 250 HP. Now, headers, a "high-flow" (whatever that is) and a muffler, and i should get near 400HP? thats a restrictive exhaust! Does this sound right to you guys? If i did pickup their suggested parts, do you think i would get anywhere close to this amount of horsepower?

Im asking here because the HP number seems great, but kind of unlikely (at least to me). Just wondered what you guys had to say about it.

Well you shoudl know that headers, catback and high flow cats dont dont add up to 150 horsepower. I think they're just giving you a bunch of horsesh|t(no pun intended! lol). With a high performance exhaust you should see about 40 horsepower. This includes headers. But due to the restrictive exhaust on the 305 you should see about 50 probably.

Well, why would someone representing Air Flow Research e-mail me something like that then?

Everyone here says they make good heads, i thought it really odd that they would so blatently give such a poorly written e-mail, on top of giving me a poor estimate of the possible horsepower gains.

I think the guy meant 300hp.

Using Desktop Dyno2000 and the parts you list, it comes out to about 300hp for a 305.

I think about 300 is probably right, in a magazine I read awhile ago they did a buildup of a 4 barrel 305, and they did use that same cam, and a low restriction exhaust, and they actually even used the stock heads and got like 290 horses or so, not sure been awhile, but I think that 300 horses or so is a realistic estimate.

Well, 400 ponies has been done with a 305, using AFR heads. CHP did this buildup, (someone here has scanned article links).

Might I add though, that the 402 HP they achieved was at *7200 RPM*.

Yes, 7200RPM.

Wow, how many dyno pulls would that last for?
I'm guessing that one only.

I'm also guessing your stock TPI isn't good to 7200 rpm, let alone the short block.

300 ponies easy.

Later,
Hype.

I have a similar cam in my 305: An XR262H version. With home-ported 305 heads, the car now moves through the traps at 101 MPH. That would be 285-ish horsepower. I cannot see the AFR heads offering a 115 HP boost... *maybe* 25 or 35 HP.

325 is attainable with a hot 305.

Then again, there is a Mr. Ken Dye who road races a solid roller equipped 305 that makes 380 HP on iron heads... He sometimes hangs on on this board.

Well, if going from the peanut cam to the 350 cam in the 5 speed LB9s adds 30 hp, you can see more than 30 hp from that cam. And AFR heads are the best there is. But I do think that 400 hp is exaggerated. It wouldn't surprize me that a totally modded 305 could make 325 to 350 hp, but 400 hp without forced induction or NOS is pretty impossible

And yet Hondas make 2.0L's that are over 200 hp stock. You can make a 500hp 5.0 if you tried. It'd just cost you

AFR is probably assuming you would be dumping the TPI if you were considering installing a set of heads with the flow of the 180's.If a 195 can easily make 525 on a 350 i'm sure a 305 could make 400.

Seems like there was a dyno article (a few years ago) that used the 2.00 / 1.55 58cc 190 AFR heads, one of the AFR cams (around 218 duration I think), RPM intake, and 650 Holley on a flat top 305. I think the article claimed it pumped out around 390 horses in the neighborhood of 6,000. I do remember thinking that seemed a little optimistic based on my engine building experiences, but not totally unreasonable considering the head's airflow capability and the rpm range the 305 was running in.

That 400HP article was named "Deadly Lessons" for a reason. If I remember correctly it threw a rod but seems like they got the thing to break in the 12's right before it blew.

I've got the World Torquer SR heads....without a cam with headers...and dual cats dual outs all the way back with TPI and i have 265 horse and 334 torq on the dyno and that's without a cam....I think a cam does'nt matter how big of a grind it is i would only get like 275 to 280 worth of horse.....
