When does the EGR valve open?

Sorry for asking a daft question but I'm not sure how this thing works.
I have converted my car to propane and at high engine loads the mixture is too lean. I have just read that the EGR valve has to be dissabled for propane use as it allows unmetered air from the exhaust into the inlet at high loads, hence causing a lean mixture.

Questions..

When does the EGR valve open? At high engine loads?

How can it be dissabled?

When running on petrol how does the engine compensate for unmetered air entering the engine.

Thanks for any replies

Simon

It only opens at low engine loads and relatively high engine speeds (well above idle). It is closed at low vacuum (high load) in order to prevent it from adversely affecting the engine's performance, and also is closed at idle to maintain idle quality.

Thanks, I don't need to disable the EGR valve then if it only opens on low engine load/ high inlet vacume.
