SBC Crank Timing Gear

Hi Guys, I'm thinking of buying one of the GM performance parts crate motors, and I want to know how difficult it is to remove the timing gear that is on the end of the crank.

I want to put a gear drive on it, mostly because I like the sound

I'm thinking the crank needs to come out, and have the gears pressed on/off at the machine shop?

I do not want to take the crank out of a brand new motor, is there another way?

Thanks!

Try a 2 or 3 jaw puller.

i'd just about think if you're asking this you ought to round up a experienced helper for the engine swap.

Just how loud are they, I remeber hearing them, and liking it

But..... Does it make it impossible to diagnose problems with the engine because you just cant hear anything else?

BTW, I have done some engine swaps in the past, but I dont have much experiece with internal engine components.... I have been driving newer vehicles for years now... My wife wanted a new car, so I bought her a 2005 Chevy Malibu... So I bought this 82 z-28 for myself, just to play with.... I'm sorry if I'm not up to speed.... I'm here to learn

It can, but so can loud exhaust. It can also play havoc with your knock sensor, if you have one.

Gear drives are one of those things that sound cool for the first 5 minutes.

What about one of the quiter types of gear drives, would one of those be a compromise? or are they pretty much silent?

Thanks!

why do you want one? they make too much noise and rob HP. a quality made chain and gear set would prefor better.

Just because.... I like the noise, besides, it's not a daily driver, I doubt I'll drive it more than 2000 miles a year, so I'm not worried about it be annoying after awhile....

I'm sure that it does rob some horsepower, but it cant be that big a deal... If my motor made 250 hp (just a #, not sure what kind of HP I'll really have yet), and the gear drive took 10 away, I dont think I would ever notice it...
