i had my car running for like 20 minutes today trying to get some of my other problems fixed and when i went to shut it off the temperwture was like 280* then it started to steam out of the middle of the radiator cap. then i looked at the overflow and it was almost full. i filled it with antifreeze yestarday, because it was filled with water, and i know i willed the overflow 2 much. there are 2 marks one says hot, one says cold, it was filled about 2 inches above hot when cold. i havent left it on for long since, i just hammered up and down my street and parked her. i swear to *** if this thing overheats on the way to work tomorow i will be pissed, i seized the engine in my winter beater friday due to the heater hose breaking, and me not looking at the gauges(gotta love fords) but tomorow ill definatly have my eye on the guages

A healthy dose of pure antifreeze will not make your car overheat. It can raise the temprature up a bit but nothing dramatic.
It's possible that the thermostate is sticking. How do the cores in the radiator look, are they clean? Is there any water dripping out of the weep hole in the water pump? I would check these out and change the thermostate. If everthing checks out then its most likely a temprature sender problem.

well, 100% antifreeze wouldn't do to good in ur car and might cause it to get to hot, this due to the poor heat transfer of antifreeze compared to that of water. if i was you i would totaly flush out\clean ur coolent system. and depending on where u live, put in the correct amount of antifreeze\water. might wanna ask some other people around there.

no no water is comping out of the pump, im 99% sure its not the thermostate because it was fine with the water, i guess ill just drain a little more, and put some water in it, right now id say its about 95% antifreeze, it happened when i was tring to time the car, do you thing early setonation or something could cause exsesive heat. thanks

Agreed.

Antifreeze is just that "anti" freeze. It's an additive to keep your cooling system from freezing during the winter.

My race car currently has an antifreeze mixture in it for the winter. When spring arrives the antifreeze gets dumped and a mixture of water and waterwetter gets put in. Water is a better conductor of heat than any mixture of antifreeze.

With your temperature going that high there's a problem and it's not with the coolent strength. Thermostat stuck closed, water pump seized or belt broken, radiator plugged solid, are my guesses. One other thing to check is for a blown head gasket. Take off the rad cap. run the engine and look in the rad for bubbles. Engine compression can put excess heat in the cooling system. This is usually followed by rads and overflow bottles constantly pushing out the coolent.

Also, pure anti-freeze will actually freeze! It must have water mixed with it to perform its function.

the more antifreeze you use the lower the boiling point you get... a 50/50 mix and some water wetter is the best choice... if the car continues to run hot you need to track down watever other problems it has...
