Running a water pump BACKWARDS!?

My son has a Monte Carlo (I know not a Camaro...I'm working on him)
wih a 3.1 6 cyl engine.

The Air conditioning compressor has completely seized (The car wouldn't even start). It has a serpentine belt.

THe only way that the mechanic could bypass the Compressor (Very expensive to replace) was to put on a smaller belt and route it around the water pump backwards.

Is my son going to run the risk of damaging his car by running it this way?

water pumps are directional.

however, for the SBC, you can buy water pumps that go either direction.

a "standard rotation" or "v-belt" waterpump turns the same direction as the crank. aka runs on the 'inside' of the belt.

a "reverse rotation" or "serpentine belt" waterpump turns the opposite direction as the crank. aka runs on the 'back' of the belt.

if you're swapping directions, you need to swap pumps.

Absolutely, that mechanic has no business touching a car if he doesn't know that. That situation has to be remedied IMMEDIATELY if the car is to be driven.
