Trying to replace my ignition switch in my 85 Camaro (the thing that is on top of the column under the dash that all the wires go to).. I have the 3 screws off, and its off the metal rod.. but there is a black stiff cable that is attached to the side.. and I can't finger out how to disconnect that. And it needs to be there as the new part has the same housing for that cable. My shop manual only lists the switch.. not how to remove it. Help?

The factory service manual sez to insert screwdriver into inhibitor slot, depress cable latch, and pull cable from inhibitor. That is the Park/Lock cable that prevents the shifter from being taken out of Park without the key.

Holy crap.. You're still alive!! Lol.. Hows things back in cold *** Wisconsin? I see you still have all three cars... but no GTO listed.. what happened to that? Still need to rebuild the carb on the 84?

Yeah, good luck on that. Put screwdriver in slot, depress... Yeah right. I practically broke the screwdriver and my hand trying this. If you have a new ignition switch, your best bet is to disassemble the old switch. Remove the tanish colored plastic section from the part that bolts to the column. Should be 2 or 3 tiny screws holding it on. Or did I just pry it apart? I forget. Anyway, once it's in 2, a bunch of springs and contacts will fall out, but the best part is the cable can now be removed without cursing, screaming and killing your hands.

To reinstall, the cable goes back in, but it requires force to get it back to its default locked position. It hits a little latch inside the "tunnel" and it requires a bit of force to shove the cable back in past this latch/catch/****/whatever it is. You'll hear a click, but you'll see the cable come to the end of the tunnel properly.

Just do not disassemble the old switch if you do not have a replacement handy. Make sure you follow the directions on setting the switch and ignition to the proper spots before installing the metal rod.

I'm sorry I ever replaced that lousy thing. I would rather replace my fuel injectors than have a go at that switch again. By the way, if you haven't removed the 2 plugs from the side of the switch, those are sneaky too. Both have 2 lil "latches" you need to depress to remove each one. The lovely part is, if I remember right, one has both latches on the top or bottom and the other has them on opposite sides and can't be remvoed until you remove the first plug as one latch is hidden behind part of the first plug. Once you actually find the latches to depress it's easy to remove. It's just finding them when you can't look at it directly.

The GTO isn't my car, remember? I'm just working on it for $$$. I'm right in the middle of rebuilding the carb for the '84 T/A. It's not as bad as I thought it would be ... should have it done tomorrow morning. A friend loaned me his GM Tech 1 scanner so it will be real easy to dial it in. I can watch all the sensor readings from the driver's seat, pretty cool!

if you have 2 people, use that hub that a grant stearing wheel mounts to and use that to depress that plate. and ur friend finagle the clip out...

if your alone....use both feet to push the plate down, and 2 flatheads at the same time to push one side of the clip out....lol hey, it works...
