(4.06in / 2)^2 * pi * 3.48in * 8 = 360 in^3

It's the formula anyone can derive in about 5 seconds from the volume of a cylinder without having to remember magic numbers like .7853982.

Re: What is total displacement of 350 bored .060 over

I don't like remembering any more things than I have to, so I only remember that the area of a circle is pi*r^2, and calculate the area of the cylinder opening. Then I can multiply it by the stroke to get the volume of the cylinder, and then multiply by the number of cylinders to get the total displacement.

If I wanted to, I could remember that the .7853982 you use is actually pi/4, but even that's too much detail.

So I guess my estimate was on, a 360. So would that mean my motor is a 360 5.9? instead of a 5.7 350

Well yea, but people will ask you how you fit a dodge 360 in there.... So you should just keep saying you have a 350 in there, since that's what the ENGINE really is.... Just some bore cleanup, but nothing to really change what the engine is.

keep calling it a 350....i had to argue with a mechanic once that when a camaro guy told us they had a 383 that they were talking about a stroked out 350 not a dodge motor...i couldnt believe he had no clue there was such a combo. lol

Re: What is total displacement of 350 bored .060 over

Reason I ask... I mean how boring is it when someone asks you... "Hey man what do you have in that thing."
"oh just a 350."

Dime a dozen.

Some people say they have a 355... which is just a .030 350
383 people include their silly .030

So why not surprise people and say I have a 360. Or simply say a 5.9?

Beats me... just a thought.

"It's a small block Chevy."

What more do they need to know?

I know 400's that are .030" over in a light vehicle that displace 406 cubic inches that are slower than my 305 was. And, I know of a particular 350 in a full-steel, full-interior '70 Nova that's faster than a lot of big blocks in similar cars.

SBC's are run-of-the-mill. In other words, "boring" by some definitions. Regardless of displacement. Even LSx is becoming commonplace.

There might be some reason to know the exact displacement, such as calculating CR, but other than that, who cares what you call it?

One of the most common comments I hear when somebody sees the hood of the '57 open after seeing the car run is, "Oh, it's a big block." I explain that it's the smallest one they made, but if they said what was really on their mind, it would be more like, "And here I thought it was something special. . ."

I ran a hopped-up 305 for 4 years. It was a full second faster in the quarter than the stock 305. Want to guess how many people asked if it was a 350 based on the way it ran? Exactly one. In 4 years. And he was a Ford guy.

When - or more likely, "if" - somebody asks, tell them its a Chevy. If they want details, let 'em ask for them.

Re: What is total displacement of 350 bored .060 over

Yea, if I hear "it's a 350" I assume it was robbed out of an old caprice/truck etc, and has a scalding 180HP.
But if I hear it's a 355, I assume whoever rebuilt the bottom end, probably put the time into replacing top end parts too, and it's going to be faster. That's just me though. Has nothing to do with the fact it's got 5 extra CID, just means that they have MOST LIKELY put in faster parts as well.

I'd just say it's a bored out 350 chev. That's what I say with mine.

Re: What is total displacement of 350 bored .060 over

If a stock "350" is 350 cid how is .06 over 360? wouldn't it be 355?

bore x pie x stroke x # of cylinders

lets see,
4 in bore, 3.480 in stroke 8 cylinders
4.00 x 3.14 = 12.56 x 3.48 = 43.7088 x 8 = 349.67 or 350

.06 over
4.06 x 3.14 = 12.758 x 3.48 = 44.364 x 8 = 354.915 or 355 cid.

maybe I need to go back to school.

Re: What is total displacement of 350 bored .060 over

ure using the wrong formula its stroke x pie x radius squared x # of cylinders so its half of 4.06 (2.03) squared (2.03 x 2.03,,, not 2.03x2) basic geometry your math is right but your formula is wrong....thats why .060 over is a 360 and .030 is a 355

next time check and recheck yourself b4 going against what like 5 or 6 other peoples math lol

you know, everything you said up untill what I quoted was fine. The formula I used is the one the shop teacher showed us to use back in high school in 1988. I didn't go up against anyone, I simply didn't understand how they came up with that formula. Maybe I went to a school in a small town that had to settle for whatever teachers would teach there, hell I don't know.

Thank you for the lesson but you didn't have to be a ********

look at 2 things,

1: I had 2 question marks on the first line. That means I was questioning
something, not going against it.

2: a 350 engine was used as an example by the teacher to explain the
formula, guess what it works.

I have always heard that to get a 383 you bore a 350 .06 over and use a 3.75 stroke crank. The formula works for that to but here is the best part. When I ordered my 383 stroker kit for my engine it came with pistons for 4.030 bore whick comes out to 379.?? using that same formula.

I don't care if its 350, 355, or 360, or in my case 379 or 383 but what burns my tail is the fact that I have been using the wrong formula for 20 years all because I DID pay atention in class.

A 4" bore engine is a poor example from which to learn. Why? Because 4.000 squared divided by 4 (or 4.000 divided by 2, squared) = 4.000. But, if you learned with a 283, which was 3-7/8" bore, you had to do learn it right from the start.

Of course, listening in math class would have been more valuable than listening in shop class. . .

By the way, "Richard" isn't welcome here. . .

I did listen in Math class, in fact that class was easy. Geometry wasn't a required subject and few people took it, taking that would have been better than shop class but I wanted to learn about fuel injection. What a waste of there cause the teacher didn't know crap about fuel injection, was stuck on carbs. That school sucked right along with that ******* town.

Oh well, I have still built bigger engines with more HP than most people ever will. If I didn't have 3 kids to feed my Camaro would be a whole lot more than what it is.

Life goes on.

Are you positive about that???

This is a "give a fish" vs. "teach to fish" thing. Put another way, "It's the difference between knowing what a thing is, and why a thing is."

For the record, I come up with 360.42 cubic inches, which translates to 5.906 liters. That's using .0016387064 liter/cubic inch (2.54 cm/inch by U.S. law), and 3.1415926535898 for pi.

Re: What is total displacement of 350 bored .060 over

Sorry to interupt...
I can never rember pie out to 13 digits so I use,
Bore x Bore x stroke x 6.28321 (don't even ask or if you must)
(It should be 6.283185 but that's to hard to rember)
That's for a V8. Since I don't own a V-6.
4.06 x 4.06 x 3.48 x 6.28321 = 360.42
Type 6.28321 on a calculator a few times and see how hard it is to
rember....just my two slabs of copper plated zink......

this just all goes back again to knowing what something is or why something is......its basic geometry....volume of a cylinder u know that famous lil formula pi r squared or 3.14 x radius^2 times the height of the cylinder.that will give u the volume of one of the cylinders so just multiply it times the number of cylinders....if u can not remeber how to find the volume of a cylinder come here to waco and ill hit u with a stick till u do. come on people and we wonder why third gen lovers have such a moronic reputation. radius is HALF the diameter. and what ever your stroke is is the height of the clinder. so square the radius multiply it buy the height then times how ever many cylinders u have and tada u have ur answer....maybe that helps u know why and not what....if anyone takes offense to this well then it must apply to u so maybe u need some tough love...

All this from a person who has a carbed crate engine instead of an injected engine he built himself.

As much as I would like to come to Waco just to see, its not gonna happen.

Talk to too easy online so talk away. You made the comment that you got called that AGAIN, I can't help but wonder why that is.

This Tech/General engine stuff is too hard for me, I'm going back to the easy stuff like DIY prom and Alternative Port EFI intakes

I went to a carbed engine because I know how much the tpi is restrictive and I will not pour that much money into a seriously flawed engine. I like fuel injection and can work with it just fine...I would like to eventually swap to an lt1 or ls1 and keeps its injection for what its worth to ya. I get people upset alot cause Im blunt. Im sorry you think the world should be nice and polite. IMO if you give a little tough love to the idiots every know and then it can help. And I do not know why my words offend you I clearly said if you can not REMEMBER how to find the volume, and your case is not a matter of forgetfulness but improper knowledge imparted on you by your teacher that you actually still remember. So if you would have been told the proper formula before Im fairly confident you would still know it today and yet again this would not apply to you. So well yes Im a jerk, Im an ***, Im whatever you want me to be its what ever.......... And when you say "instead of an injected engine he built himselfl" does that imply that you hand assembled your motor because well to be quite honest I would not believe that. Can I assemble a motor? Yes I have done it several times at school and once with my buddy on his LT1 vette....Would I assemble my own motor probably but I had the chance at getting my crate motor really cheap so I didnt pass that up. I can argue all day about what you and I can and cant do but in the long road it does not matter so well I bid you adieu.

Can I assemble a motor? Yes I have done it several times at

school

and once

with my buddy on his LT1 vette....Would I assemble my own motor

probably .

I should have seen this comming!!!

Your just a punk kid fresh out of school

Yes, I did hand assemble my engine. As well as my transmission and rearend.
Made my own 4" maf and guess what I tune this car myself and even with a computer

Look a few posts back at the race car, I BUILT THAT ENGINE and tuned it.
I have all the tools I need to built engine except for the big stuff like a boring machine and a balance machine.

My last engine is under the carport waiting on my to stop playing Barbies with you and come finish hooking it up. 2000 Mustang 4.6 Its not mine which means people PAY me to work on their stuff.

I built my first CAR engine back when I was 15.

I have built 3 Cummins engines and 2 Caterpillar engines, in case your wondering thats diesel engine. you know, like in those TONKA toys you have.

But really, I'm sorry man. If I had know you were just a punk kid I would have never wasted my time calling you a "RICHARD" cause thats just not the case. your just a little. kinda like my 16 y/o son, picks up on one thing and thinks he knows everything. Its cool, I figure we have all been there and you will(in most cases) grow out of it.

"several times at school and oncewith my buddy" thats some funny stuff right there, but not as good as this one,

"Would I assemble my own motor probably" probably as long as your buddy was there.

I know that with you being just a punk kid that you will have some remark cause thats whats kids do, they backtalk. but please understand that I don't have time to play GI Joe cause daddy has to go back to work.

So feel free to call me names and say stuff like "I'll beat you with a stick" and "tough love" cause I do not have time for your kid games and words like tough love from a 22 year old just really don't mean much except to those kids who are still in school that think your so cool with your "carbed cause I can't do fuel injection" Camaro that BTW looks great!

Your still just a punk kid

ok ok whatever dude I just know its a little stretch of the imagination that you can build your own hi power motors, and all your bs but you dont know how to find the displacement of an engine....I have nothing to prove to you I might be the child but im not calling anyone names "punk kid"...yes that hurts so bad. I too get paid to work on peoples cars...What is your point.... Before going to scool for automotive I was and Industrial Mechanic I have fixed machinery worth more then all of your cars combined at age 19. AND I GOT PAID FOR THAT TOO... Im not an idiotic kid, yes im 22 so im a good bit younger then you but age has nothing to do with skill, I understand that you are upset that this "punk kid" corrected you on your math. Im sorry that you are insecure and felt you had to start throwing out info about all these high power motors and crap whatever dude live your life have fun. Just dont forget this "punk kid" knew something you clearly didnt....now thats funny

Re: What is total displacement of 350 bored .060 over

O yeah one last thing I dont want to be an engine builder I am an Automotive technician ill leave the engine building to those specializing in such.....i dont measure myself by how many motors I have put together the fact that i know i can do it is enough for me. I am happy with and proud of my life and I dont need to try to project all of my "acomplishements" to make myself feel better. And im sorry but i just cant get over the irony of you calling me a punk kid when you are being directly insultive and a little more immature...o well ill stop instigating now. bye Mr. Adult..
