Pick-up coil removal

Ive been messing around with my car as it wont start anymore. No spark, replaced the dying fuel pump, filter, coil, module. If i take it the distributor apart and remove all the connections and replace them and put it all back together and try starting it will start then die instantly. I am finally going to try replace the pick-up coil in the distributor.... My question is, How do I go about removing the old one??? 87 Iroc, Hei remote coil system

Re: Pick-up coil removal

did it last year some time....you have to disassemble the distributor(take off coil, cap, rotor, ign. module etc.). Its easier with two people ecpecially when it comes to hammering out the little pin at the bottom of the distributor so the shaft can come apart to access the pick up coil....not very hard, just remember your steps during the process so you can put it back together properly.

Up until removing the distributor i have down very well lol, just once the module and rotor are off, do you just pry at the cylindrical ring thing or is there a clamp?

There's a pin at the bottom of the dizzy shaft. You have to drive it out, remove the gear, and then the whole thing will come apart giving you free access to the pickup coil.

throwing parts at cars

did you check the resistance of the pickup coil first

man can I have a loan with all that wasted money you are throwing around

I know, the car is old and you want to replace everything?

Re: Pick-up coil removal

Be careful when removing the shaft from the case. It can be a tight fit and might want to get stuck. I have heard of people breaking the case by getting it stuck and trying to tap it out with a hammer. Make sure the inside stays lubricated while taking it apart.

Re: Pick-up coil removal

check the resistance in the two pronged plug that comes off the pickup and plugs into the module

500-1500 ohms=good

Re: Pick-up coil removal

BUMPED!!!!

I am having a similar little issue, where the car only misfires when the EST bypass connector is connected...
I checked the resistance of the new one still in the box and it is at 758Ohms while the old one on the car is at 816Ohms... is this enough of a difference to cause this issue. Also when you press out the roll pin on the drive gear, can you reuse it?? i kind of want to do this tonight and everyone is closed....

Re: Pick-up coil removal

I dont know how to test it under load though. To my knowledge When the EST bypass connector is disconnected, there is a smaller load on the pickup coil??? Does it sound like it could be the culprit here?? Ill replace the pickup coil tomorrow and see what happens.

Re: Pick-up coil removal

This one is Reman with a lifetime warranty but it will take some time for it to come in. I think i will return the parts and just warranty this one out for a new one...

Sorry to post on such an old thread but y'all were talking about it. I got good ohm between the two leads but have a service Manuel says test between lead and ground on dist plate should be infinite, but I get nothing from this test. Does that mean my pickup coil is toast.

Infinite means nothing, so since in your case there is no connection to ground, your pickup coil has passed that test......

Aw heck I'm an idiot, I was thinking I was supposed to get the beep for continuity. Book said infinite so I thought a beep or at least some reading should show, thinking backwards as usual, thanks!!
