Fuel pump won't shut off....
Pulled my '91 bird (3.1 v-6) out to get it ready for summer. The fuel pump stays running after the key is turned off. It's cold outside and I feel like crap so I just parked it and pulled the battery cable off for now.
Stuck relay maybe??

Either that or thick oil. How long does it run when you turn the car off?

It ran for 10-15 min until i pulled the battery cable.
Thick oil? i was looking at the wiring diagram in the factory service manual and saw the oil sending unit was in the circut at the ECM.
Does the sending unit control the fuel pump in some way?

Re: Fuel pump won't shut off....
this is an electric in-tank pump, right?
if so, it's prolly gonna be a stuck fuel pump relay. take a hammer and tap it, plug it back in, and see if it still runs after that.
what does the oil have to do with the fuel pump????

Re: Fuel pump won't shut off....
When you shut your car down, try turning the ignition back on but don't start the car. Does the oil light come on? I ask this because it's a common switch for the driver oil pressure warning lightalso also providing 12Volts for the fuel pump.
The fuel pump is switch to run once the oil pressure sees a certain amount of pressure. It should kill the pump when the motor stops because the oil pressure disappears.
You problem is more than likely, the oil pressure switch or the fuel pump relay.
Cheers,
Col.

Re: Fuel pump won't shut off....
Thanks guys,
I 'll check them both. I put a new sending unit in 3 years ago when i bought her ( gauge didn't work ) so i'm thinking it's the relay.
But ya never know...could be the new sender ?! lol
