my car wont shift untill extremely high rpm help!

Recently my car has not been shifting efficiently

it waits untill beyond yellow and red line 5500, 6000, or above to shift out of first, and the same with 2nd.

when it gets to those rpms trying to shift, i have white smoke/haze entering the car from the center interior vents

could this be a bad trannsmission?

all the fluids are filled correctly

89 V8 305

any help would be appreciated

-Thanks

what tranny do u have? it could be a broken or bad adjusted TV-cable
Or your vacuum line is out.

Re: my car wont shift untill extremely high rpm help!

dont worry about noob questions, everyones a noob in some respect to different technologies and such, like how I had to ask a question about my starters gear that was binding with my new flexplate and th350 I swapped in.

If you have 4 forward speeds, ya know the 1, 2, 3 and 4, you most likely 99% sure have a 700R4 and you doooo need a properly adjusted TV cable.

And no, I'm not going to tell you to search because I'm not a big fan of being told to do that my self, but I would suggest it

"To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the D button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does."

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ent-cable.html

Also... Inspect the cable, is it frayed, does it pull loosly, is it even attached to the hook inside the transmission?

IMO, it is part of why I like my th350, and yes I know, no over drive gear as someone will surely be quick to point out, but for me it is irrelevent because I do not need it and I sealed the detent cable with an expansion plug and black RTV sealant )

Oh the quote above, easier to understand in my opinion than the technical article on the site. Good Luck, please let us know how it turns out.

Oh and PB, while the TV detent cable is the first place to look I want to ask, is the governor stock, have you changed any springs/weights at all? If you find there is no problem with the detent cable (dont get worried about this yet) it could be some junk in the governor valve, weak springs, or possible some junk in the throttle valve in the tranny. Try the Detent cable first though, good luck!

I had that same problem and ended up rebuilding the tranny, installing, burned it up, rebuilt again. Then I realized how to set the TV cable.
I just hope your burning haze doesn't have some ill side-effect that will come back to haunt you. Congrats on the fix.

Did it just go away, or did you have the problem fixed? I was gonna say as others did, it probably was the tv cable adjusted too tight.

me and my dad fixed it ourselves by adjusting the TV cable

i was surprised something so small like a cable on the throttle could have such a big effect on the performance

Those tv cables control the tranny fluid pressure in the tranny. Glad ya found it. I adjusted my tv cable on my iroc a while back.

Re: my car wont shift untill extremely high rpm help!

I know this is a really old thread but im running into the same problem. I dont know what trany i have, all i know is its an auto with no overdrive( that i know of). Yesterday i was driving at some fast speeds with no problem, and this morning i drove it without warming it up( its a bit cold here) but she ran fine, but this afternoon after 2nd gear it would just stop shifting unless i hit at least 5k rpms. Is the tv cable adjustment different for different trans?
