Car stalls/quits when coming to a stop or idle.
I finally got my 84 TA running, took it to its first cruise night and the damn heater core went sky high on me. Fun. That is now fixed. But there was another issue that perplexed me.
When I was driving it the car ran great. It would throw you back in the seat in every gear when you punched the throttle. But when you were coming to a stop or trying to idle it would die. Now after I fixed the main problem of the blown heater core, I went back to see if I could get it to idle to no avail.
Opening the manual I went to "Car starts and runs ok but won't idle. It pointed to a vac leak. I have replaced the PCV valve, and am going to replace the carb mount gasket. I was checking the EGR valve and while the diaphragm moves with difficulty it seems to be stuck open. My reason for believing this is when you turn it over the round opening is stuck open and won't close all the way. Everything else checks seems to check out. Am I missing anything here? All the lines are either hooked up or plugged. While some of the lines could be replaced I know it was idling fine before a good 20 minute run at speeds of 40 +.
If the EGR is indeed stuck open like I think it is then that is my leak that I've been looking for.

Re: Car stalls/quits when coming to a stop or idle.
EGR was sticky, Carb mount gasket was totally shot, PCV valve was replaced, TVS Purge was broken (replaced), I have the car idling again but I haven't had it on the road because of a high idle. Due to it getting cold and the weather starting to change I decided to start doing another project in the form of weather stripping because the car is coming into the garage for the winter. I'm suspecting the high idle might just mean it needs to warm up, or it could mean something else is out of adjustment. I'm thinking of rebuilding the carb because it has 172K miles on it and it sat on a shelf for almost 7 years. When I fire it up to pull it into the garage I'll let it warm up and see if the idle drops. What I do know is if I plug up the air break going to the air cleaner, and throw the choke wide open (vertical) then blip the throttle the choke closes. That was done wtihout the car running though.
