vortec 350 vs vortec 383

I wont make this a long post. Ill try to keep it short and simple for you guys. I know there will be alot of different opinions but lets hear them!

I wanted to order my rotating assembly this thursday. Original Plan was 383 stroker w/ forged crank. Stock heads with alittle work as i want a set of Afr's at end of the year or early next year. LT4 hotcam carb conversion.

Should i stick to that route or do a 355 w/ fully forged bottom end and spray it?

Money is an object so am not gonna lie, i would like a fully forged 383 but the kits are a tad more then what i want to do. I have seen the 355 forged kits are cheaper, probably cheaper for machine work that am doing also.

Will i be dissappointed not going with a 383? ONLY con i dont like is most 383 i see die out on top end.

Goal is 114mph trap capable motor w/ no spray. Suspension, tranny, and rear are setup already.

Do it once & do it right. If you want a forged 383, wait & get a forged 383!

Only difference in machining cost is the cost of clearance work for the stroker crank. Most say it cost $50 extra for that.
If doing a full rebuild you still have to pay to get it bored .030 over regardless of whether you are going 355 or 383

Re: vortec 350 vs vortec 383

Agree with both of you....problem is i have been out of a car for over a year now. Its time to start ordering lol.

fully forged 383 is out of the question (forged crank only)
fully forged 350 is an option

As am looking at alot of 383 builds here on the board for 383's am seeing alot of 280-320hp/ 400tq numbers....I would be very dissappointed if it turned out that way lol I want hp/tq numbers close or matching within 20 or 30. If the stock heads with alittle work nets me 300hp, and the AFR's or Dart heads net me 400hp, that i would be ok with.

Carb vs TBI? Am not going TBI, or have i even thought about it, most numbers i see are from TBI, is the carb setup gonna net me more power? I dont know what carb to go with yet but i can tell you it wont be no BS edelbrock 650

Re: vortec 350 vs vortec 383

i would hope those numbers are to the wheels. Would be sad if a 383 made 280 to the flywheel lol.

There were a few Piston kits and H beam rod kits i was looking at but each were around 600$. I dont want "top notch" kits but again i dont want cheap stuff either.

I guess my main thing is i dont want to be dissappointed in the build when its done. If i know i have a fully forged bottom end 355 then a 125 shot or 150 shot might put me where i wanna be. I wouldnt want to juice a 383 with it not being forged and all.

Can you understand where am coming from? i got 2 days left before i want to start ordering lol

$600 is not going to buy much in the quality stakes; probably Chinese

From what I can see there is little to no difference (<$50 ) in kit prices for 355 or 383 rotating assemblies
For example Scat kit ; I beams ,forged pistons ,cast crank
355 $710
383 $730
Need to step up to $1200 for forged crank on either kit

And if you are only looking to spray a 125-150 shot, just stay with stock components. Anything more than stock internals will handle plenty more nitrous than that...as long as you have it setup and tuned correctly for nitrous!

your missunderstanding me. What i said was i seen a kit for Pistons (i think KB forged) for 600$, i also seen a H beam rod kit forged for 600$. Pistons + H beam rods = $1200 not including crank. You might have just read it wrong or i didnt clarify it well enough sorry.

where did you find the 383 kit at? Cheapest i seen was $989 from northern auto parts.

I do plan on having alot of time on the dyno, i want this thing professionally tuned

I don't know of any, properly built and matched as a package, that have that issue.

Bigger motor making less top end, no. You will totally hate building a 350 after having driving a 383.Its worth putting together a few bucks and do it now youll thank yourself every time you start the car.
