89 305 TBi intake on Gen 1 350 engine ?

Can an 89 305 TBI intake be used on a Gen1 Chevy 350 crate motor (mexican motor)?

That is what is currently on my car (by previous owner) and someone I spoke to mentioned that they will bolt up, just wont work correctly. The car starts but seems to have a huge vacuum leak because it surges at idle and won't get the car around the block under ANY throttle.

Any insight surely appreciated.

Sounds like it is time to pull the intake off and check the seal on the gaskets ( or for warped intake )

Re: 89 305 TBi intake on Gen 1 350 engine ?

Just an FYI....the head casting number is 33417369 (non vortec with perimeter valve cover bolts) and the only number I can see on the block is on the passenger side in front of the head and that number is 1M0810 9VP.

Yeah, I already replaced the intake gaskets and the intake didn't appear to be warped off my straight edge. I noticed the center 4 bolts on the intake were at a different angle to the rest of them making it very difficult to to install and torque them.

Somewhere I read that the cam needed to be a TBI cam as well, of which I cannot verify. But what I assume is this...

Previous owner got an older 350 crate long block and simply bolted the intake and everything off the 305 onto the 350 without regard to cam, knock sensor, ECM etc...then couldn't get the thing to run right and just got rid of the car.

Wondering what is the best way to remedy the situation....later model long block or TBI intake designed for the older 350 block. Is there such a thing?

The 4 center holes need reaming out to suit the different bolt angle used on the early style perimeter bolt heads you have.
If you haven't already stripped the threads in the head forcing the bolts in at wrong angle then possibly that is the source of your vac leak due to inadequate clamping around the ports?

Re: 89 305 TBi intake on Gen 1 350 engine ?

The PO had reamed out the holes on the intake already and the bolt holes are in fine shape. The bolts however do not sit flush against the intake.

It's apparent from reading here that many people have done the 305-350 TBI with success, but it seems they use a later model engine or have Vortec heads.

Dunno what the deal is...an entire engine swap is looking more and more favorable the more I learn about what the PO did with the car. Hacked wiring, hacked engine replacement and the list goes on. I've done an LT1 swap already, so I know that system like the back of my hand. That idea is looking better every day.

You can get a holley tbi intake or any sbc (w/ your pattern) & use a tbi adaptor.

Square bore only I believe.

To the OP, Dont Use the Stock Intake!! It'll fit but it was HORRIBLE!

Any success stories on the SBC intake with TBI adapter? Seems like the least expensive way to go...

You're gonna run out of hood clearance real quick that way, though. You'll probably get stuck running just an Edelbrock Performer intake, the RPM is much better, but Im not sure you'd really have any room to run a decent size air filter with one. I'm running a Holley on my Performer RPM and I have a 1.5 inch filter on a drop base. I could probably fit a 2 incher on that, but Im not sure. The regular Performer will probably be fine for a stockish TBI engine anyway, though.

1. Post your own thread.
2. Learn how to tune your TPI system or put a carb on it. You cant just expect a random mish mash of parts to run right on a system calibrated for an entirely different engine.
3. Your engine is probably some god awful 7:1 compression smogger POS, a big cam will make it run like crap period.

Jeese man, go easy on the guy. He's like 23 and has only been on the site for like a day or two. There's nothing wrong with your post I agree with everything you said, just show a little hospitality.

I'll admit that annoyed the hell outta me. Even so, don't give him a negitive experiance this early in the website. Even if he deserves it. Or needed it. Which he did. And he does.

ok ill take the caps off for you if it makes you feel any better.
1) the car is not tpi its tbi
2) i wasnt asking a question just talking about similarities to the original post
3) its not a piece of ****, its a car with an issue
4) it doesnt have a big cam in fact its a very streetable cam
5) arent the fourms for issues and guidance to help you figure out problems?
6) there isnt a "mish mash parts on it either" every part was matched before it was bought
7) is my punctuation good enough for you?

I like the listed numbers, easy to read, but I think it needs a topic, and It didn't really make sence with what you were saying, so a normal paragraph would have bee... oh that last one was a retorical question. Yes I see.
Welcome to the site any how.

1. TBI system is tuned for the stock TBI engine. You change parts around you need to retune it. It's speed density which means the computer assumes a certain amount of air makes it to the cylinders, you change the efficiency of the cam, the intake, the induction, the exhaust, it throws off that efficiency number the computer uses to calibrate how much fuel to supply.
2. I dont see many similarities, but that's fine.
3. Okay
4. What are the specs on the cam?
5. It needs it's own thread but we've already gone down this road.
6. Just because it fits and bolts on doesn't mean it matches. What parts do you have? Specs and parts numbers on aftermarket parts would help.
7. It is slightly improved. Thank you.
