Can't Remove Pilot Bearing
I am trying to remove the pilot bearing in my car but it will not come out. I was using a slide hammer with a remover and had no luck with it and ended up breaking the tooth on the puller. I never have luck with the grease method either. Any ideas? I kept trying to pull it and ended up breaking the inner part of the bearing out but the outer part is still in the crank.

Re: Can't Remove Pilot Bearing
axle grease and a aluminum or steel rod and a mallet works every damn time when its done correctly, it might take several times to get enough grease packed in but it will work.
to remove a pilot bearing you pack grease thru the center hole until the grease is flush with the bearings upper surface and insert a dowel into the center hole thats a loose sliding fit but will slide into the bearings inner diam. a good hard whack, on the dowel will hydraulically force the bearing out as the grease expands under the bearing, as the dowel compresses the grease as the grease can,t be compressed, and the hydraulic pressure forces the bearing up and out of the crank.
crank pilot bushings are usually removed with grease, being packed into the recess inside and behind the bearing, and having the bearing hydraulically forced out by driving in a wood or aluminum dowel to compress the grease, the grease forced to move away from the dowel, forcing the bearing out

THERE ARE TOOLS TO REMOVE PILOT BEARINGS BUT THE HYDRAULIC GREASE METHOD WORKS IF YOU DON,T HAVE ONE

Never tried wet toilet paper! Grease, yes, but wet toilet paper... never. So there's just one question I have about using it. What do you wet it with?

I have the same problem occasionally - mainly on worn ones.
I find getting a drill bit that's marginally smaller than the cross section (between the hole diameter and the crank) and drilling down the length of the bush (parallel to the crank) in 3 or 4 places around it, then a couple of hits with a small cold chisel and it all falls out.

Re: Can't Remove Pilot Bearing
I assume the old one was a roller? If so, the grease method wont work with a roller bearing type thats stuck since its not solid like a bushing.
Your probably going to have to split it. One way is to carefully use a dremel and a grinding bit to cut one section of the race so it can be split and removed if a puller cant get it out. What type of puller are you using? The one I got from autozone had pretty thick jaws, and was able to extract a bushing that was stuck and unremovable by the grease method.
