Exhaust leak cause misfire/backfire?

My car was misfiring/backfiring today. I've been told that an exhaust leak will cause this. My car would make a small popping noise out the exhaust every once in a while. I did change the timing a couple days ago and its been running fine until today. Could the exhaust leak that I have cause this or should I check something else?

Yep, same thing happened to me once, when I had a bad exhaust leak at the y-pipe, car would backfire upon deacceleration.
