Engine Shops

Hey, I'm lookin for an engine shop in the GTA. I am in the process of purchasing a 1987 Z28, but it needs an engine.
Its got a 305 Tpi in it, but not in running order. I'm lookin to buy a 350, carb or tpi. I was wondering if anyone knew of any engine shops that they could refer me to. I found crosstown engines, (www.crosstownengines.com) and they have a really nice 285hp/336tq 350 carb motor for $1495.00, however they want to charge me $350 for some core charge because i'm giving them a 305, and $750 to install it. I do get a 3yr/60,000km warranty on it though. 1495+750+350=2595.
2595+ tax isn't really in my budget. I'd do the engine install myself but I don't have the time or room or equipment. Any help would be appreciated.

$350 for a core charge is pretty high. You can get a 350 from a wrecker for around $150 bucks here in Brantford.

ok, but if i get the engine, how well does it run?
How am I gonna drop it in?
I have no time whatsoever to drop in the motor myself, or the space to do it.

that may not be in your budget BUT 2595+ tax is a deal with a 3 year warranty and installed!!! it might sound like alot to you now but i dont think you will find a shop to do it for less. and if you were to take it to a race shop they will give you no warranty at all. take some time and look around to see what other shops will charge and you will see. just be sure to have them price out the same power and parts. (so you can compare apples to apples)

i think he ment that you buy a 350 from the bone yard for $150 and use it to take in so that it only cost you $150 instead of $350 core charge

Talk to some older guys in the Toronto 'car club scene':

Crosstown Engine Rebuilders and another organization- Concord Engine Rebuilders/Concord Head Rebuilders/Mario D'Angelo Automotive (like the multiple names?)- do NOT have very good reputations for quality/reliability and honouring their word.

I've used Beatty & Woods in Mississauga with good results- the problem is they only do the rebuilding- not removal/installation in/out of a vehicle (maybe they could direct you to a shop they work with for this purpose). Another shop that appears to be reliable is Agostino Racing- but they do most of their work on LT-1, LS-1 and LT-4 engines (i.e. 4th Gen, Impala SS and Corvette work).

Crosstown is average..They do all the"have to's"..Its OK if your looking for a motor thats a bit more reliable than a stock rebuild,,But dont expect much from performance..They also just copy(loosely)a combo and say it makes the same HP..

Beatty and Woods is a great place IF you can afford it..lol

I've heard from alot of people that Beatty&Woods is a bit pricey- however- my experience doesn't show this. When I had them do my bigblock- they were priced right along with 3 other shops for the work (of course the term 'bigblock' basically doubles the price over a smallblock everywhere).

Last time I asked about a smallblock rebuilt- the "Beatty" of B&W told me a 350 I supply (complete- i.e. with whatever heads/intake I wanted to use) would run me about $1300.00 for a complete rebuild- obviously this is not a balanced/blueprinted rebuild but included pistons, rings, bearings, head rebuild, cam/lifters and all gaskets/seals. At $1300.00 that's in the same ballpark as all the other 'generic' rebuild shops out there (actually $2-300 higher)- but at least you can be confident the machine work was done and it's not just a re-ring job called a rebuilt. Might be worth investigating for anyone needing a rebuild done anyways...

And as mentioned above- $200.00 will get you a 350 core in virtually any junkyard out there- $350.00 is too high, period.

You seem to have a number of problems:

1) No time.
2) Not a big budget.
3) No mode of transporting an engine or non-running car.

Unfortunately these elements are all interlinked:

Either get more money in the budget and pay for everything you need/need done.

Find some time and/or a friend that owns a tow truck or at least a pickup and a tow-bar to do the work yourself OR move everything around to the shops that you will pay.

You cannot get this worked out without some concession on your part: money, time, or equipment.
