Car won't start after warm

Every morning my car cranks fine. After letting it warm up, then I turn it off, if I try to crank it again, it will not start. If I wait for about 30 minutes, the car will crank fine. What do you think? Also, could the ignition coil have anything to do with this problem?

Does it crank but not fire during the no-start episodes? Or does it simply not crank at all?

If the engine will crank when hot, you need to determine if it has spark while cranking. If so, the next plausible explanation would be fuel.

Does it help to floor the accelrator during the no-start condition?

Cranking Problems, Help!!!

After being warm, the motor will turnover fine but will not crank. If I wait for about 30 min., the car will crank once again. It's hard to identify the problem because the car runs fine when it is drove.

I must have my semantics all wrong. To me, "cranking" is the effect of the engine being spun by the starter motor. That is the same as "turning over", but I could be mistaken. Wouldn't be the first time.

I've got the same problem with my 89 gta. The car starts up instantly when cold, but when warmed up and especially right after a hard run, I can't shut it off and then imediatley restart it. My car turns over, has spark, but gets no fuel. The fuel pump runs, pressure is at 45psi, it just doesn't pulse the injectors I guess?? If I wait about 30 min. it will start right up like stated above. If I don't want to wait I can use a gas rag over the throttle body and it will start right up. Does this have anything to do with the MAF burn off cycle that I've read about on the boards???

Check the starter...I know it sounds funny. I had the same prob on my 89 GTA one time and I changed the starter out for a new one and it solved the prob. If I remember right I just had it checked at AutoZone and they said it was fine but what I think happens it gets hot it doesnt have the power to crank (Im guessing, lol). It cranked like a new car for a while but after a yr or two it is not wanting to start very good when it gets hot, yes it still starts, but hesitates. I am sure it is going to mess up again soon. Everyone dont blame me if changing the starter doenst help, I am saying that is what I did to my car. Good luck all and let me know if anyone finds out anything else since mine is starting to act up again.

I can tell you that I'm absolutely positive that it is not the starter that is causing my problem(please read above that "the car turns over fine" that means proper speed with the same exact speed it has when it starts up cold) I know for a fact that my problem is a fuel delivery issue not a cranking one("car will start when a gas rag is placed over the throttle body"). What I mean by a "gas rag" is a rag soaked in gasoline, and when it is placed over the throttle body the fuel vapors are pulled through the throttle body when the engine cranks over which are then ignited by the sparking spark plugs which causes it to start and then run fine. I have a new granitelli motorsports 255 L/hr fuel pump, 1yr old accel 26lb/hr injectors, all new relays, new fuel filter, and a new mass air flow sensor from auto zone. I just can't figure out why it won't start up immediately after I kill it when it is warm, and am going broke and getting frustrated trying to fix it. By the way it is also not egr related in case anyone is thinking that because I have a stealth ram on it

mine did the same thing it was the starter, i never would have thought it cause it worked fine when cold but as soon as it warmed up it wouldn't start would take 30m to cool down i belive it is caused by the silenoid being so close to the block and overheating.

Reviving the past!!!

You can read ALL about my problem here:
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=291499

Zokal, I'm interested to see that you're getting spark and fuel pressure. As you can read in my post, I also have spark and fuel pressure. I bought a noid light set and we'll see if I can say for sure that I have no injector pulse,

I have not actually tried the gas rag trick, but you're not the first to have it work. Once it's running, have you ever had it shut off? I have NOT ever had a problem while running, only restarting. This all REALLY seems to be pointing to the ignition module. I replaced mine a while back, but that doesn't mean it's not bad again. They can be tricky. Per the advise of others here on TGO, I'm gonna splurge for an AC delco module. And yes, use the white grease!!!

Check back next week. I'll have some troublshooting done this weekend, and we'll see what I can find.

Re: Car won't start after warm

I bought a 90 Firebird with a 3.1 that had been sitting for 3 yrs. It wouldn't run do to shorted injector. I replaced fuel pump & injectors. It starts and runs fine, after I drive it and shut it off it wont start right away, It needs to sit about 5 min. or so before it will start. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Re: Car won't start after warm

I’m also interested if you found the reason. Today I started my Trans am -89 after many years. Started fine, let it ran untill it was warm. After 15 minutes I tried to start it again, the starter motor runs but it doesn’t fire up. With starter spray it did start but died again. Some old fuel ofcourse but added 12 new liters before first start. Any ideas?

Re: Car won't start after warm

if it sat for that long....there is probably crap in the injectors. Try to test the resistance when they are hot/warm. If the injectors are bad more often than not they fail when they are hot
