So I have read a lot of stuff on cylinder head 14102193 and if I am right used only on chevy trucks with TBI systems. Did 87 camaro 350's TPI systems use these or do I have the wrong heads? Is the engine I have from a truck TBI? What cylinder heads should be on this? This was an engine swap and from what I know was from a trans am or firebird. Any answers would be much appreciated.

They are 350 (5.7l) TBI swirl port heads. Never factory installed on a TPI engine.

What should the cylinder head number be? How would I know by cast number on engine block if it is also from TBI? Someone put 1.6 roller rockers on these would that make any improvement. Should I just ditch these?? What is the best cylinder head with a little performance? I guess I would have to replace cam too am I correct? I think I got screwed buying this thinking it was a TPI...

'87 up f-body L98 TPI used the '083 head casting (non-swirlport).

As for the block, TPI & TBI used the same one. Who knows what is in it for a cam. Measuring the lift would give you an idea of what cam is in the engine. Can use a dial indicator on the push rod (remove rocker arm).

RBob is correct, 083 is the correct head casting for a 5.7 TPI engine. With a little porting and good springs, the 083 heads perform pretty good. They have a 64 cc chamber, which is a plus. Having 193 heads on there is a pretty good indication that you probably got a truck motor in there. The downside to that is the block itself usually isn't totally identical to the f-body ones. The bad part about that is the truck engines usually got a flat tappet cam instead of the factory hydraulic roller cam, and a lot of times the block won't be fully machined for accepting a roller cam setup. If you're lucky, your block might have all the machine work already done to accept a roller cam. If not, you'll be stuck with a flat tappet cam unless you have the finishing machine work done. Flat tappet cams are ok, but having the hydraulic roller is so much nicer. Your best bet would probably be to hunt down a 87-92 f-body or corvette 5.7 to put in there, unless you don't mind running the flat tappet cam. If you decide to stick with the motor you've got now, I'd suggest at least ditching those 193 heads for better ones.

This really sucks guess I will try to measure the lift and hope for the best...Who knows maybe someone just put crap heads on it. Thank you for all the information and will be looking for a new/used engine.

This is an old thread but I have questions about my engine. My VIN says its a TBI engine in my 89.



I have a 89 IROC that had a rebuilt engine when I purchased the car. I am searching the numbers to verify what it is. Its a 350 Roller engine with 5.7LG SGI on the back. One the block is it stamped 638 near the plug. On the engine its stamped V0326SAF which I cannot find the SAF listed.

The VIN shows 350 TBI which I though they didn't make in 89. Funny thing the engine is TPI with TBI heads. 14102193

My engine has TPI on top. There is nothing wrong with it and it runs great. I have read this can be a truck or car block. The heads are the mystery.

VIN 8th Digit "8" is 350 TPI

Hi, I have a 1994 GMC pickup and it has the original engine. It is the 638 block with the 193 heads, which is a TBI 350 (not machined for a roller cam).
