HELP!! 700R4 leaking Bad!....
PLease help. I've got an '88 Trans Am with the LO3 and a 700R4. It's leaking tranny fluid BAD!! We put 2 bottles in tonight, and by the time I got home (about 20 miles), it was all leaked out! The RPM's surge when I'm going 70 from around 1800 to 2100 very rapidly. When it's REALLY low, i can feel it surging. We're gonna put it up on blocks tomorrow and see where it's leaking from. I hope it's just a gasket or something. Does anyone have any suggestions?? I know I'm not providing a lot of info, but I don't have much. Thanks in advance to all!

There's a hole on the direct bottom of the Tranny cover. Directly under the torque converter. It looks like there should be a plug or something. Because the hole is round and about a centimeter wide. I'm just guessing though. Is there a plug that's supposed to be there, because it would be a good place for one. Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

are you saying its leaking from the hole in the torque convertor cover? if you are then the front pump seal is most likely leaking. No plug or bolt goes in there.

I took some pics, but I can't get them small enough to post, so I put them on my site.

They're on the last page (page 6) at the very bottom. Sorry, and thanks!

yeah that hole is supposed to be there,if its leaking out of there most likely it is the front pump seal.Pull the cover off and look up behind the convertor to see if its coming from there.

So you're saying that a seal is broken inside the cover? So, if that's the case, what should I do about the hole in the cover? Thanks, sorry, i'm just a little confused.

Im not sure what nitrovette is saying...(not that he's wrong)
it sounds to me like your tranny pan is an aftermarket one. Some aftermarket pans have a plug so you can drain your fluid. That is what it looks like to me. If it is just a hole on the bottom of your pan, try going to autozone and picking up a drain plug.

I jus looked at the picture...nevermind what i said above....vette is probably right. i thought the actual pan was where you had your hole.

Thanks, so is there a part number or something? Or do I just ask for a tranny cover plug for a 700R4? Thanks,

Go back and read prOject's edited post. That hole in the cover is not the problem. Take the cover off and you will see transmission fluid is not stored there. The cover is just that, a cover. I protects the torque converter from getting damaged by rocks and degris under the car. It sound like the front pump is leaking or the torque convertor itself is damaged. When you drove it home did you notice a difference in the way it felt in first gear or leaving a stop light? Anyway, it sound like the front pump to me. Take the cover off. If you are leaking fluid that bad, it should be pretty obvious what the problem is.

Thanks, i'll try and take it to the shop in the morning. So if it indeed the front pump seal, is that expensive to fix? And what should I do about the hole in the cover? Is that ok how it is? Or should I get a plug or something for it? Thanks

i believe someone mentioned it is supposed to be there. probably so if something like that happens, it doesnt fill up with fluid. kinda of a warning sign. heh.
yah, their right...its jus a cover, keeping roadkill off your flywheel...
mines been off for awhile, no idea where it has gone.

Damn, the guy said that if he were to pull the transmisison out, then it would be better to rebuild it and put all new seals while it's out. Since my dad ould be paying for it, due to me spending most of my money on the paint job, then it would get a mostly stock rebuild, no performance parts.

How much was he going to charge you to rebuild the tranny? In some cases it may be better to by a new one. A local shop was going to charge me around $1200 to rebuild mine back to stock. I got a Pro-built for $1395.
Where in Bastrop do you live? I lived there for about 5 years.

We've been to a few shops, but I think the average os about $1100 to rebuilt it. I spent all my $$$ on my paint job , so my dad's gonna have to pay for it. He saus that he's not gonna pay for ANY performance upgrades. I live south of Bastrop, towards Smithville. Thanks,

Don't tell him you are getting performance upgrades. How much is he willing to spend on the transmission?

Well, he found a guy that'll rebuild it, and put some 'performance parts' in too. What performance parts should I be asking for? I was thinking about the corvette servo?

I would get the corvette servo and the Transgo Recalibration kit. I have a transgo recal kit that I bought and was going to put in my transmission but didn't get a chance to before the tranny died. I decided to buy a tranny from Pro-built that already has it installed. I sent you a PM.

You can get one from www.Pro-Built.net. I'm not sure what he charges for them. I got my corvette servo off ebay for about $15.

Thanks!, but I don't know if it would be here in time. I need to have my car back by Thursday, so I don't know if that would work out. I'll just ask the guy if he's got one. What exactly does a Corvette Servo do? Sorry, knew it's good, but forgot y
