Anyone know the HP and torque rating of the 700r4 Trans. I may have to have mine rebuilt. I would like to know what the factory specs are before I have it done.

For example: If I decide to put a 350 hp motor in the car will the trany need to be built up.

I have done a few things to the motor( see sig) and need to know were the line is. The car will most likely never see a drag strip. Thanks

if its an untouched stock tranny, id personally get it rebuilt and built well. 700's are weak. And its torque, not hp that will kill it

I agree torgue is the major killer.


The link posted provided the info: its around 325 hp and 400 ft lbs. of torgue.

If im going to drop a bunch of money getting it built up, Im may just go whole hog and get a T-56. I wanted a stick when I got the car, but they just didn't make them,...sigh.

Odds are it will be a long time befor I can do that. So a standard rebuild may be the order of the day and in a year or so get a t-56.

At the very least get more 3-4 clutches and use a Vette servo. A good shift kit and the trans will hold up for much longer than you think.

I just swapped in the T56 when mine went, but I also had the money at the time.

did you do thew swap yourself? If so how much time did it take and did you get the car on a lift?

I did the swap myself. No access to a lift at the time. I used 4 jackstands and a couple of 4x4s to get the car up in the air high enough.

It's tough to say how long it took. I did a lot of other things while I was doing the swap. I built a complete new dash out fo steel and aluminum for one, and that took a lot of time. I also completely rebuilt my trans before I swapped it in, plus I added a steel 3-4 fork.

If I just had to do the swap I'd say a full weekend wouldn't be a problem if you have everything on hand, all the tools you need, adn a friend to help you wrestle with the trans.
