How to tell if the converter is broken?
Just wondering what the symptoms are for a torque converter that's on the way out?

I blew one up at the track. I noticed a noise I have never heard before when I was in line. I was a slight ticking, that sounded like it was coming from the trans. It would go away in park, and neutral, put it in gear and it started to "chug-chug-chug". I could acually feel it in the floor. I happened to have my buddy that built the tranny there and he said the T.C. was going bad. I had just put it in a month ago. Anyway a few more runs, and it got noticably worse. I drove it around for a week or so. There at the last it would kill the car at lights, unless I stalled it a little. The lats few days it made really LOUD noises and started missing gears. We cut it apart to see that it looked like it had a gernade explode inside. Curse the bastard tranny shop I had bought it at before I had my buddy work on the car.

I know they slip, but if one was on the way out, would it slip more?

If the sprag is going away in the torque converter, you will start to lose stall, and it will be very doggy off the line. If it makes noise, then it is self evident that there is a problem. Very rare that the stall goes up when they start to go.
