Looks like I am going to switch to a TH350 and keep the 700r4 for a spare. The 700 is ok for now, but not to weekend track use.

I want to use a Transgo rebuild kit from Dana at Probuilt. How many of you have rebuilt you own th350? How much easier is it compared to the 700r4?

This will be my first rebuild, but I am not a newbie as far as working on cars. I have done some engine work and have insalled a shift kit in a th350 before. I have even tore down a PG trans.

I bought the haynes transmission rebuild manual, but would I have been better off with a ATSG?

Oh yeah, I can get two th350 trans out of 78 4x4 trucks. I will have to change out the tail shaft and output shaft. One I can get for $85 and the other for $125. A local trans shop said he had the tailshaft and output shaft for $30. Or should I just try to find a complete trans?

been a while and i've not done a 700r4, but i'd say the th350 is about as easy as they come. get a good manual and room to lay out the parts and you shouldn't have any problems.

I figured a th350 was a good one to start with. I plan on taking it apart and lay it out on some shelves in order I remove it. Car craft has some good clear close up pics of the building process. Bigger than in the Haynes manual I bought. I just wonder if I should have bought the ATSG instead.

Like ede said, TH350's are one of the simplest to rebuild (much more so than a 700R4). If those trans cores you plan on buying have 6 bolt inspection covers, ****** 'em both up because they're HD units! Very simple to convert the 4x4 trans to a "regular" config when performing the rebuild.

After studying the rebuild manual, everything is removed and put together in sub assemblys. It dosent seem to be too bad of a job. I will just take my time, and ask questions if I get stuck. One good thing about the assembly, is that if things dont rotate in the right direction, then I know it is wrong. I can then remove the sub assembly and correct my mistake

Do you mean the Dust cover (inspection plate)? Not trying to be dumb.

If so, I will check the cores out. I want to buy both to have a spare. My friend has 4 extra PG pumps if the one in the TH350 is scared up. The best of my knowledge, they are the same pumps right?

Yes. Generally, the HD covers are aluminum with bracing bars going to the engine mounts.

No. Chances are the TH350 pumps will be fine though, since they're the gear type which are generally problem free.

Thanks for the info on the cover, I will check them out.
When you say they are HD units, Do you mean the hard parts are better quality or just the case or both? Will there be any differences in the bushing in size or anything like that?
