Take the TH400 slip yoke and slide it into the tranny all the way. Pull it back out 1". Measure from the center of the u-joint on the slip yoke to the center of the yoke of the diff. That's the correct length.

im sorry, but if you read the my first post, youd see that i wrote that the car is in pieces. (meaning not together). therefore, i couldnt measure it myself, that is why i made this thread.

There are many things when building a car or engine that require it to be together for proper measurements. If you're going to get a driveshaft custom made then guessing at the length could cost you the price of a second driveshaft.

Yep, I'm using my stock 82 driveshaft with a TH400 slip yoke on the end. The length was fine with a short tail TH400.

if youre putting the engine in stock location then that reply is your answer

thm200c driveshaft will work if you have the short th400 trans

this isnt rocket science

if you have stock car non modified chassis and engine location and have short th400 then you need 200c shaft, simple as that,

i highly doubt that you are modifying your car in such a way that the engine and such will not be mounted in factory location,

but then you never provided any info about whether you were going to place your drivetrain in stock location or not- so i am assuming that you are going to leave it in stock location and so the answer would be a stock thm200C shaft,

however, when it comes to modifying the sub frame so that you can mount the 400 to the subframe then youre gonna have to go custom due to how far back the trans mount is on the 400 trannies, about 6 or 7 inches back further than anything else,

i would talk to evilcartman and others about what they did to mount the 400 under their cars,

i was going to put a 475 trans under my z28 but i decided not to use that tranny, and am going to put a 350 one back in it again and save myself $ and headache
reasons why:

-475 is longer than a 400 longtail so i would have to customize driveshaft length since GM didnt make a drivesahft that will fit this vehicle with this tranny length
-would have to customize subframe in order to mount the tranny
- would have to buy another TQ arm mounting kit and im not willing to spend the $ for one when i already have an extra 9" tail th350 and TQ arm mounting brackets just laying around and the correct 700r4/ 9" tail th350 shaft too

the answer to your original Q is one word:

THM200C

which is 3" longer than 700R4/ 9" tail th350 one

(you asked what driveshaft you needed)
and need to knwo what driveshaft i need
you didnt ask for the length- and you dont need to know the length anyways- so as long as you are going to get a stock driveshaft(thm200c)
but if you are going ot have one made then yes one of us forum members will will have to get you the length of a 200c shaft- but again so as long as your drivetrain will be placed in factory location in your ride

if you still dont get it or dont want to accept the answer then well

i cant help you and i wish you the best of luck

i try my best

we really all seem to be misunderstanding each other here
we all want to help, thats the goal here

good luck
