transmission wont hold gear
I just installed a new transmission today and I am having problems with it.
The transmission wont go into gear and when I do get it into gear it wont hold.
The TCI instructions said to put a quart into the converter (new TCI) and then 4 quarts into the trans.
Then start the car and fill the rest of the way with the back wheels off the ground.
I did this but the trans wouldent go into reverse or drive when I shifted there. I can give it a little gas and when I let off it goes into gear. but then when I shift to drive it just acts like its in neutral unless I do the gas thing.
What is wrong???
Its a turbo 350.
Thanks for any help.

Done that a few times, though the trans was dead when it wouldnt go into gear and it just needed a quart or 2 of fluid

A trans needs somehwere around 12+ quarts or so.
Its really bad for the clutches to not have enough fluid. Theyre only made of paper and glaze/burn real easy with slippage.

Well I filled it with enough fluid but now I have a different problem. The trans wont downshift into first gear when I come to a stop. when I step on the gas again it just stays in 2nd.
Sometimes just when I come to a complete stop it SLAMS into first.
Any ideas?

i'm kinda having a similiar prob. sometimes when i take off from a dead stop the torque converter stalls to 2k and feels bogged down and at 35 mph or so it shift to third. my trans is a rebuilt 700r4 from maddog transmissions. stay away from maddog trans he's a expert salesman not a expert trans builder.
