I have a 9" thats just a little over 56" 1/2 from out side bearing flange to out side bearing flange , was woundering if it will fit my 83 camaro?

Before you get too far into this... how do you plan to mount the torque arm to the rear end?

Yeah, unless you are planning on running a completely different rear suspension setup like a 4 link or something, a 9" is out of the question.

Besides, unless you are making a ton of power, a 10 bolt can be built to be plenty strong. The cost of installing a 9" would be far more that just building your 10 bolt to withstand the power you are making-whatever it may be.

IMO sell the 9" and go buy a gearset, posi, and girdle and call it a day.

My 10 blot is a posi and it`s broken so it`s gonna come out and be replaced with a 9". I own a shop and can fab many things from Chassis to Complete Cars. This is a street strip car so it`s a whole new game for me. The car is still inside the trailer so that's why I asked. I don't want to pull it out till I have all the info needed to complete the game plan.

You say you can fabricate... do you know of a way to make a bracket to mount the torque arm to the housing? Thats really going to be the most complicated thing to getting the 9" to work. No sarcasm here, if you do know of something, I'd be interested in seeing what you have planned, as I'm planning on upgrading the rear end in my car as well. I already broke my 10 bolt in the spring, and and running on a borrowed rear at the moment.

The only way I can see using a junkyard 9" and making it work in a 3rdgen F-body, is to use an aftermarket center section meant for the F-body 9", like from Strange, in a factory Ford axle. I don't know if those center sections will fit a factory housing though. Anyone know if this would work?

The torque arm isn't attached to the center section. What you need to buy is an aftermarket housing with axles from any of the companies that offer it for the third gen. The housing will have all the mounting hardware including the torque arm mount.

You then install your own center section and brake system. The housing with axles is around $1000 compared to a complete, ready to install system, for about $2500.
