700R4 shifting question

While just cruising at light load, my 700R4 only shifts into 4th gear above 45 mph. If I drop below 45 mph it shifts back into 3rd. The tranny all seems to work fine, no hard shifts, no weird noises so I'm not sure if I have a problem. Is that how they work or do I need an adjustment somewhere? The car has a 2.92 rear. Perhaps it is shifting based on rpm. Any thoughts?

Re: 700R4 shifting question

I have 2.73 gears and when i hit 42 or so it will shift into overdrive, wont go into overdrive lower than that. When i go lower than 40 it goes back into 3rd, i think it has to do with the governor. Sounds normal to me too.

Re: 700R4 shifting question

It does sound nornmal... I have had 2 of the overdrive gm trannys and they seem to only shift into overdrive (4th gear) at around 40-45 mph.

Re: 700R4 shifting question

Thanks guys, that's what I wanted to hear. My daily car is a Malibu Maxx with the auto 4 speed. It gets into 4th as soon as it can and stays as long as it can. So I was just curious.

Re: 700R4 shifting question

What about when it goes back into third, and tries going back into od? Any hardness or hesitation? Do you have this?

Nope, everything is smooth. The only thing I actually notice is the revs of the engine going up and down with the gear changes.

Re: 700R4 shifting question

The car has a 2.92 rear.
that sums it up......it doesn't need OD at lower speeds with a gear that steep.
