700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

I just installed a 700R-4 I got into my Trans Am. I got a TPI 350. Whe I went to test drive it, it took off fine then got up to 25 mph and wouldn't shift period. When I let off the gas and get back into it it wont kick back into until the RPM I let off the gas in. I am seriously lost here... Any help you guys could give would be appreciated.

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

SOunds like a problem with your governor. there is a round cover near the back on the driver side of the trans. Use a hammer and a screw driver to get the cover off, you will probably find that the gear is worn on the end of it or the valve is sticking in the governor

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

Sounds familiar.....17,000 miles on my rebuild & suddenly it started requiring 4000+rpms to shift.

After adjusting my TV per my 87 FSM, no change. Fluid & filter change...No change.

It gear, it HOLDS & the tires (285/17s) are history...Just NO upshift.

Governor?

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

Ya the governor controls the shift points, and its common for the gear to wear off (plastic) if it does the trans will not upshift.

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

you can change the springs in the governor, the lighter the spring the later the shift, heavier the spring earlier the shift, Also if you want even later shifts and the springs already really light you can grind some of the weight off, The easiest method would be just to order and Corvette governor though, but if you don't mind messing around then find some springs and go at it.

How'd you get your shifts back? Mine was off & on, and now nothing.

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

The governor was missing outta the transmission... I put in a new one it's working great just need to get stronger springs. Cause mine is shifting some where in the 3000 rpm range.... I am really not liking that.

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

Thats encouraging news (for me), suggesting that my governor gears just stripped out.

I'm pulling the cover off tomorrow & looking.

Where'd you get the governor? (I case I need a new one)

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

Here's what happened with mine. The transmission shop pulled the valve body off and there was trash in there that kept the check ball from working correctly. so they cleaned it out and installed a helper spring to go with that check ball.

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

Ok after 2 years of sitting I was ready to take the camaro out for a spin and put some new gas in it. From what I was reading in this thread I seem to be haveing the same problem wont shift out of first. Anyone have a photo of what they had to do to the governor??? Or a link ????
I am hoping that this will solve the problem did not want to pull the drive train just yet

the govenor is located on the driver side of the tranny.... It's a round cover. You can pull the govenor with out having to pull the tranny....

Ummmmm......There is so little room between my governor cover & the tranny wall, my hand barely fits in there.

No way the cover is even coming off, much less the full assembly.

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

The governor comes out with the trans still in the car. I remove the crossmember to get it out of the way along with being able to drop the rear of the trans a little (just a little, don't wack the firewall with the distributor).

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

Ok got mine out without removeing the crossmember was close but it came out lol needs a new cover seeing it was rusting away and first hit put a hole in it but there is around 5 or 6 inches from the cover to the floor pan. the gear was fine but the wings seems loose and weak anyone know if there just suposed to flop around or have tension on them ?

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

They do flop freely. Hold it on end and be sure that the weights are pushing the spoolvalve INSIDE up in the bore. And be sure the spoolvalve INSIDE freely returns to the postion.
There are 2 parts to the 'wings' with a spring inbetween them. Be sure those little springs are keeping tension on the 2 'wing' peices.
If you have drastically changed gear ratio or are looking to time the shifts sooner or later, then you can get a Governor Recalibration kit from B&M. It comes with a few different srpings and weights, as well as 2 new holing pins and e-clips to make it future servicable. Instructions are included but usually takes a few tries.
Clean the parts with mineral spirits and dry.

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

Ok so the wings flop freely and the spoolvalve when held gear up moves freely but if you turn it sideways it does not move with the "wings"
So if this from what I am reading looks to be fine what else would stop it from shifting out of first the transfluid looks to be fine I have not droped the pan yet and the TV cable for what it looks like is stock never been touched.

There is one strange thing and someone test this on there TV cable if possable when the cars at idle and in park I went under the hood and pulled on the TV cable there is a "vacuum leak / exhaust leak" sound

just a ???? what does the GM S.M. say for adjusting the TV cable, i know oif you pull it back you will get firmer, later shifts and push it foward for softer early shifts but what is the Proper way to adjust it

Re: 700R-4 Wont shift outta first gear.

If governor doesn't fix your messed up shift points and a t.v. cable adjustment doesn't seem to you might have to pull the valve body and free up the throttle valve (not to be confused with the t.v. plunger). The plunger pushes the throttle valve internally in the valve body when the t.v. cable pulls. On high mileage 700r4's these throttle valves stick easy. The aftermarket has updated throttle valves with return springs to prevent this. You need to remove the valve body to do this because there is a second roll pin in the valve body that prevents the valve from coming out in the throttle valve area. You could remove the outer plunger and bushing by removing the outer roll pin with dikes and use a strong pocket magnet to try and free up the throttle valve with patience without removing the valve body. If it doesn't have a return spring it will probably get stuck internally again so it would probably be better to just pull the valve body and upgrade it.
