I have a non posi-traction rearend and i heard from my buddy that you can add a coil or something for like $100 that will allow that rearend to become a positraction rearend any answers to this? bogus or not?

when i was a kid the rumor was you could back up and lock a stock rearend and then you got two wheels with power when you hit it off the line. i never saw that work, and i never heard of what you said either.

That's not true. You can do something similar to the 9 inch Ford, but it doesn't work very well for GM rear ends. The easiest thing to do is install a Lock Right. I prefer the Eaton posi.

The only thing that cheap would be a spool off of ebay. And there not too fun on the street.

or u can weld them together for free and it will work for ever if the weld is good

alot of 4x4 guys do that but to be honest i dont think id take a welder to the rear end in my car

lie said a few posts above, the only thing you can buy for less than a hundred bux is a mini spool, that will lock the two axles together permentatly. Not a good idea for street use.

Welding the differential gears can be very dangerous. The gears are heat treated and welding them can make them brittle. If an axle gear breaks then the c clip can fall off and the axle can come out while you are driving. That is why the NHRA and others have banned this.

A spool isn't a good idea if you are going to drive on the street, because the tire closest to the curb needs to turn slower than the outer wheel, if this doesn't happen the rear will do all sorts of fun stuff and could cause you to lose traction. A better option would be to invest in a 4th gen rear end. I think the going rate on these is about 300-500and with that you get better brakes, better gear, and a posi all ready to bolt in. Prolly about the same price as that spool after install.

But then you have to worry about the wheel offset difference. Thats a little more money. Cheapest bet is to get a 3rd gen rear with posi. 200-250 bucks.

Finding a posi, at least 150 bucks+install is going to be close to 500 bucks.

I have a spool in my car, and its not bad on the road with the right tires, but at slow speeds its a pain in the ***.

ok well my dad said something about a 411 rearend or something of that sort and its suppose to be BADA$$ any input?

if you do alot of highway driving 4.11s are not that great, not horrible but could be better

it replaces the open differential internals with a locking type setup which will instantly turn your open rear into a posi...full lock in straight line, but it will open up around corners so the outer wheel can spin faster

you should match the gear to the motor combo. Mainly 1/4 mile performance or else you'll run out of gear before you hit good speed. 4.11's are good for high revving motors. If you dont have enough rpm to make 4.11's worth it, your overgeared and will hurt performance. It will get to 60 quick but after that your out of gear. A car like that isnt to fun.

But posi is and you should upgrade to a posi diff and match gear to your combo

Do you know anything about the rear end in your car? Do you know the gear ratio? If you want something quick and easy then go with the Lock Right. If you want a gear change then the Lock Right isn't going to be any easier for you because the backlash is going to have to be set again anyway. The Eaton posi would be the way to go if you also change the gears.

I don't know exactly what you are looking for, but I've got a 9 bolt with 3.27 gears and posi for sale.

I put a mini spool in mine, I will never never never do that again! Around town its only mildly annoying, but getting in and out of parking areas is a pain, It makes bad noises, and in the rain it's flat out deadly. 1. suggestion, DON'T EVER PUT A SPOOL IN A STREET CAR! you'll die.

For gears you could run 383s, there kinda a nice middle ground between way low like 411s and your stock high gears

spools aren't that bad, as long as your careful. I've had them in two pickup trucks, my ta, and impala and my bronco. I also have a friend that has full spool in his chevelle, and we live in a very mountainous region, they are all right. However, if you are looking for a quality route I think that an eaton posi with a set of richmond gears would make you happy. Like blp 22 said, they aren't fun in the rain or parking spots, but it is all preference.

Your Monte Carlo uses the same 7.5 10 bolt as the 3rd gen, so the same things apply. Check the "FAQ about 10-bolts" sticky. It has everything that you need to know about the 7.5 10 bolt.
