700R4 Troubleshooting

Ok... ive got the 700R4 in my 87 camaro, and ever since ive had this car ive had an odd problem with the transmission. If i take the car, shift from Park to Drive (not overdrive, but overdrive does the same) and start to accelerate, it will pull to about 3500rpms, then it feels as if the transmission just gives up and goes into neutral... however, if i start the car, shift from park to 1st, accelerate , shift into 2nd, it will shift gears. Is there some form of cable or something that controls the automatic? Id think it was a bad transmission, except that it manually will shift, it just seems like when in full auto (drive) it cant pull it off on its own. Could this be caused by the TV cable being bad? or maybe the governer?

p.s. i really dont want to hear "transmission is bad" or "it needs rebuilt"... so if you could spare me those sad words it'd be appreciated. I just need this transmission to last a few more months till my T-56 budget is ready to swap.... thanks in advance for the help.

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

i just rebuilt my tranny cause it wouldn't shift between 2nd and 3rd. This doesn't sound like quite the same case but the problem with mine was the plates were wore a little and the space between them was to much for the tranny to shift under acceleration. That may help you or may not, just my 2 cents

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

I like the sound of "make sure your tc cable is adjusted properly"... to do this i basically push in the tab, pull the throttle to WOT, release the tab, and its pretty much set, right? i know this may be the issure cause the carb was recently installed and im not sure if the guy was 100% sure what he was doing... seeing as it was timed horribly...

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

Well, the TV cable was definatly WAY too loose. I adjusted it, took it for a drive... now it shifts automatically into 2nd... and thats it. Im gonna have to pull the pan.... hopefully nothing too horrible. But im preparing myself to do a tranny rebuild. Any help/pointers here would be great. I picked up the Chilton book on auto trannys, and ordered another one specific to 700R4's... if i do a rebuild, its gonna be rebuilt to specs that can handle my 383 for a while. Any body know of a kit thats good to roughly 500hp? And how terribly HARD is it to rebuild? I understand its very meticulous, but is it too complicated or anything? How long should i expect to have no tranny in the car? Im kinda shooting for having it done and back in the car within a week... is that feasable?

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

ok.... ive come to accept the fact that my transmission needs to be rebuilt. But... im debating a few things, A) rebuild? B) buy a rebuilt?... im leaning towards buying a rebuilt. I can get a rebuilt 700R4 for around $500, torque converter for around $300. so all said and done im in for $800... or, i can buy a rebuild kit for around $300, torque converter for around $300... and im for $600 and get to wonder if i did it right. any tips?

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

For $200, it's worth having someone to punch in the nose if the tranny doesn't work as advertised. I am all about doing my own work, both for pride and to save a buck or two... but on an automatic transmission, it's well worth an extra two hundred, IMHO.

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

yeah, thats what im figuring... and the place offers a 5% military discount, which will save me a few bucks, so i cant complain, and if its built up a bit, i can get away with running my 383 on it for a while once i get it finished and swapped in. Last question: Does someone have a easy guide or can point me in the direction of how to remove/reinstall the tranny? from what im reading i just unconnect all lines, unconnect the TV cable, unbolt the bellhousing from the engine and remove it from the driveshaft at the U-joint? Also, how should i go about supporting the engine? Would a jack stand or two under the oil pan with a nice flat board to distribute the weight work? or is there an easier way? How long should i expect it to take to remove the old, and install the new? Oh, and ive discovered that a used non-rebuilt 700R4 can go for as much as $200... so i think i can actually come away pretty well. Any tips on doing this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

When i took mine out i didnt have to support the engine at all, and i think you pretty much got it down how to take it out, disconnect lines, tv cable, Shift cable, remove the cross member, take out converter bolt, bell housing bolts and such, tranny's are really pretty simple to remove and put in on our cars

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

awesome... thanks for the help. I have a tendency to over-research things to the point where i dream about them before i end up doing them, and same applies to the transmission. So i should be good to go... now i just need somebody to donate a rebuilt transmission to me... anybody?

Re: 700R4 Troubleshooting

take the time to get a few of the Good less spendy parts..

most of them you can get from GM..

for like $20 to $40 Bucks..

servo parts /Vet upgrade parts....if your going to do it.. spend the few Bucks and get a few of the Good parts..

dont buy into that ricky race convertr for $200..
it's not going to work.. you will spend $400 fOR ONE THE WILL WORK AND STAY ALIVE!! if your using the 30 spline 700R4 ASK B&M if they have part #70421 (IN A SMALL CORE)
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70421/

THIS WILL stall a bit more with lots of Torque (383)
(i flash mine to 3500..pulls the wheels 3 to 4")
drives fine on the street..

The small core is a roll of the Dice.. they would have to look and see if they have one..the thing with the small core is 5lbs lighter then the standard 70421. and it lets you spin up faster.
and holds up Just like the rest..it looks like a 9" converter.. so you can rev faster.... they have sent me free converters to replace others of theres that Broke..(after 5 years).. they stand up for there parts when others will not...(5 years) who els would drop ship a Race part to you after 5 years...

this is what they did for Me..

i broke my rear end at 100MPH in the QT mile.(brake teeth/pinon)
took time to shut it down.. it took out my tranny.(sprag). and also cracked the converter front Hub.. in the pump slots.

they had summit send me a new one.. for Free.. over night..
and sent out a call tag for Mine that was broke..

any way when i got the new one it was also the small core 70421.
not has Hvy and way smaller.. and wow big diff..

the same part # was stamped on the smaller one.. and i even asked them about it.. then they gave me the info on it..

(i also installed a carri entrps 9" rear end..)
