Re: 700r4 truck?

you're better off getting one from another f-body if possible. if you get one from a truck you will have to change the tailshaft out anyways cause the truck doesn't have the torque arm bracket mounting provisions.

Re: 700r4 truck?

that trans works just fine... change out the tail shaft from yours and put on the truck trans... also you need to take the speed sensor tone ring off the truck trans and put your stock gear on instead. but that depends on the yr truck trans you get....

Re: 700r4 truck?

The one for my '85 was rebuilt and I wanted a post '87 version so I picked up a 700r4 from a truck. The casing is thicker and you might need to trim (1/2") of the outer edges if you have headers. Over all I'm very happy with it.

Re: 700r4 truck?

Make sure it's not a 4WD truck, and not diesel, and then change the tailshaft housing.

Re: 700r4 truck?

Add the Corvette servo and seals while it is out. This will prolong the life of the 3-4 clutch pack and the 2-4 band.

Re: 700r4 truck?

There isn't a tailshaft housing on a 4wd transmission, just a very short tailshaft, and the transfer case bolts to the rear of the transmission.

Re: 700r4 truck?

I was told that if you remove the transfer case off a 4wd, and remove the Tail shaft from a 2wd, that you can't tell what trans is what because the car the same. And that the transfer case off a 4wd is interchagable with th tail shaft off 2wd.

So the trans are not interchangable?

Re: 700r4 truck?

Not without disassembling them to replace the tail shaft. The shaft on the 4wd is several inches shorter than the 2wd.

Re: 700r4 truck?

Yeah you would need to disassemble it and install an output shaft from a 2wd transmission. Which wouldn't be a big deal if you already had a 2wd transmission that was bad. Oh and you knew what you were doing. A automatic transmission isnt something you want tear into without a bit of knowledge

From what I found
The output shaft from a 4wd is 4 3/4" shorter than one from a 2wd
