pinion yoke vs u joint strength
I need to replace my pinion yoke and have been looking into various options to gain the most strength possible. the differential is a 1990 3.23 posi disc brake unit. The driveshaft is the stock unit for now although i could replace it at a later date.
1; the stock pinion yoke with a Lakewood 23011 high performance cold forged non cross drilled u-joint
2; the chevy astro-van pinion yoke with a1350 size u-joint and the neapco 2-1153 conversion u joint (hot forged and cross-drilled with a grease fitting)
It seems to me that the larger u-joint and pinion yoke would be the better of the two, but i'm not sure.
I haven't been able to locate a cold forged non cross drilled performance conversion joint but there may be one out there. that woulld seem to be the best bet.
I realize that to see any benefit from either idea i would have to replace the front u joint as well, and in the case of the 1350 conversion the trans yoke would need to be swapped out. right now though I am only concerned with the pinion yoke.
I have also seen forged steel yokes on the market, but have not seen them offered for either of these two options, does anyone know who offers them?

Good point Apeiron, I was asking because I need to replace it anyway and I can do either for about the same cost.
My question centered around the u-joint as much as the yoke. would the u-jount be considered a weak point? And if so, which way would be the best?

The only reason to put a 1350 pinon yoke on a 10bolt would be if you're getting an upgraded driveshaft that has 1350 ujoints. Don't bother putting one on only to convert it back to a stock drive shaft with a conversion yoke.. The conversion yokes are a weak point and should be avoided.

mike, if you meant conversion u-joint I understand. my intention is to convert to a 1350 driveshaft at a later date when funds permit.
Apeiron's question is still pertinent, are any of these pieces worth adding to a 10 bolt?

There are several other parts in the 7.5 that will let go before the yoke or u joint. The 3R u joint is amost the same size as a 1330 u joint, so it's plenty strong. If you had plans of upgrading to a 12 bolt or 9 inch in the future and wanted to get a 1350 drive shaft made then I can see where you woudl want to go with the 1350 u joint, but chances are that you will have to modify the drive shaft later to work with the 12 bolt or 9 inch anyway.

i put a 1350 pinion yoke on myt old 10 bolt, but that was just because i had a new driveshaft made with 1350 joints, and i didnt want a conversion joint in the rear since a new 9" rear was in the works.
like said above, no point upgrading the yokes and using conversion joints to the driveshaft.
but, if you really want to do this, i still have the 1350 10 bolt pinion yoke on the shelf, should still ahve the seal too, if you are interested.
