Hard 1/2 shift and shift into drive? 700r4

I replace the TV cable thinking it would fix the problem, but it still does it. When I first start the car and it's cold it really jerks when you shift into drive. And while driving, it just revs higher and higher before finally shifting into 2nd gear. Like it's delayed.

We adjusted the TV cable but pushing it all the way in and flooring it. When we did that it pushed the adjuster sleeve all the way out (we assume that's just the proper adjustment)

After we adjusted it, the end of the tv cable itself sticks out through the black plastic connector thing. Is that right? I can't figure this out. Thanks!

No that is not the proper adj. Read the threads on TV cable adjustment....

It seems to be the proper adjustment to me. I just looked at the thread that explains it and that's exactly what I did. Should the cable be taught when all is adjusted? Or should the cable stick through the black clip thing and stick out past it.

Push in the button on cable, push cable all the way back in, let go of button, push throttle to wide open and return to closed throttle position by hand, while pulling back on cable housing by firewall, it should be adjusted. If it is loose, there is a problem w/ the cable....

Re: Hard 1/2 shift and shift into drive? 700r4

I played around with the cable a little just now,and drove around. There was one point where I had the car running, and in neutral I could pull the tv cable and it would feel springy(I assume as it should) and the cable was in all the way as it should be (again, I assume) After I went back out later on, and had the car running, the cable was suck out and would not move. I drove around a little while and I stopped a few times and checked the cable. Sometimes it was taught and springy like I assume it should be, and sometimes it was "stuck". Do you guys think it's the cable or a sticky throttle valve? I have read that the tv in these transmissions tend to get sticky.

I really want to figure this out soon, because I know it's not good to drive like this.

Re: Hard 1/2 shift and shift into drive? 700r4

I had a recent issue with the cable self adjusting all the way out. This sounds definitely like a TV cable issue, and should be corrected NOW before you continue to drive it before you toast your clutches.

Press the Button on the adjuster. Push the housing all the way back. Release the button. Now by hand turn the throttle to WOT. You should hear at least one click. If not the cable is too long and needs to be shortened. If it adjusts all the way out then either the cable is too short or your self adjuster is stripped. It shouldn't be pulled all the way out. Mine did this, and when i pulled the cable out the self-adjuster had worn and stripped so it was pulling out with the normal tension of the spring.

Either way, i would say replace the cable. It is relatively simple and cheap. I bought one from Napa for $23.

Re: Hard 1/2 shift and shift into drive? 700r4

I had just replaced the cable, and it does adjust all the way out. We did have a problem with the transmission end of the cable getting stuck up inside that plastic sleeve. May that be what's happening?

It wouldn't hurt to pull the pan and take a look at the mechanism. Its a pretty simple lever, and you should be able to see if anything gets stuck or caught. If it's adjusting all the way out that is probably your issue.

What I don't get is how sometimes the cable will move just fine and then if I park it and go back out later, it's stuck all the way out again. I'm trying not to spend any mroe money on it since I just got a whole set of new tires.

Re: Hard 1/2 shift and shift into drive? 700r4

I'm trying to go to a dealership my uncle works at to use a lift and stuff so I will have to take a look when I do that.

What I want to know is what exactly happens when you shift into drive. What is happening internally in the transmission when you slide the shifter into Overdrive? What caused the car to jerk and the engine to slow down? I just want to learn how all of this stuff works so I can understand it better.

Re: Hard 1/2 shift and shift into drive? 700r4

what did you find out? thing is that my car is doing the same thing, it clunks when you go from park to drive or reverse, and cold it shifts around 2500 and shifts hard but as it warms up it shifts smoother and i can barley feel it shift and the RPMs lower when it shifts and if i shift gears after its warmed up like drive to reverse the clunks not as bad and is barley there. im thinking transmission filter and u joint.

Re: Hard 1/2 shift and shift into drive? 700r4

I found out that it was the tv cable. The clip at the end broke so it wasn't attached to the throttle lever anymore. I really noticed when I hi the gas from a stop, and redlined, but only crawling. I replaced it, and it fix it. I think I need to replace it again, but this time with a gm one. Anybody know where I can get one?
