700r4 decoding

Hello everyone. I have a 700r4 i am going to rebuild but wanted to decoed it if anyone can tell me what model vehicle it came out of. the number on the pass side boss is: 9FKM1253 cant make out the last letter possibly D. I can only make out 95KM on the sticker that was attched to the bell housing. It has MD8 on the bellhousing. The driver side has 8663549 stamped on it. I believe it is a 89 model year. Thanks.

Re: 700r4 decoding

That tranny is a 1989 and later 700R4
Im gonna break it down for ya in sections:

9FKM1253 = 9 FK M 1 253 ?

9 = Last digit of year (1989)
FK = Model type (THM400)
M = Transmission type (M=700-R4)
1 = Last digit of calender year (NOT ALL MODELS)
253 = Day of year built (Sunday, September 10, 1989)
? = Shift build (a&b = First shift, C&H = Second shift)

Re: 700r4 decoding

The tranny could of came out of any truck, astrovan, or another camaro. These trannies are usually mismatch, but perform almost the same. Major differences include but vary by year; torque converter, number of vanes in front pump, TV controlled or vacuum controlled, TCC lock up or non-TCC lock-up. The only concrete way to verify a tranny is by vin identification. Some numbers and letters from the vehicle vin number will match the numbers that are stamped into the tranny case. These numbers are called the "VIN derivative" It will be pretty tough to trace what the tranny came out of. The reason why trannies are switched around is because most shops already have a tranny ready to be installed to reduce the wait time.

Re: 700r4 decoding

Well, I hope I can revive this 11 year old thread. I think the "3" you saw was a "B" and it was built the 125th day of 1989, which would be Friday, May 5th.

I wish there was a chart of what the second and third letters meant I have 1DBM220B. Any insight on what the "DB" is?

Thanks!!
