4L60E to 700R4 swap... linkage question
Okay, so I have a 91 RS that originally had the 4L60E tranny, and it was switched out to a 700R4. The shift cable that was installed was a zip-tied and jerry-rigged damaged Pioneer cable. I guess they couldn't find one to fit, so they just tried to make this work... They also modified the bracket.
Anyway, I spoke to a mechanic and he said that the only real fix for this problem is new cable, shifter, and brackets specifically for the 700r4 for $220.
My question is, is this my only option? Is there no cable and bracket that I can pull from a junkyard for the 700R4?
Nevermind. Just found that these are essentially the same transmission. My husband was swearing they weren't, and that we need that setup that the mechanic suggested. I'm just going to grab a couple junkyard cabels, and see how they fit.

The 91 did not have a 4L60E; that wasn't introduced in F bodies until 94.
It had a 4L60 (no "E") which is just the new name for the 700. The part itself is identical in every way.
You can still get all new stuff at the GM store AFAIK, for ALOT less than any $200. Shouldn't need any brackets. Just get the right cable.

Thanks for the confirmation. I saw it on wikipedia, so I wasn't entirely sure how reliable the info was.
I do need the bracket though. The one that was on there had been modified. They ground out the large opening that the cable fits into. Not quite sure why, but they made it bigger... ?
I looked in several places for the GM cable, but couldn't find it. Which GM store are you referring to? I checked GMPartsCenter.net and GMPartsDirect.com. Neither had it.
I ended up buying a used cable and bracket for $40 on eBay. The local junkyards don't seem to have very many Camaros, and what they do have is pretty well stripped.

Admittedly you already have a cable and brackets but on the future consider a place like thirdgenranch as he has parts that are not listed and might be able to help. Especially for something like the shift cable as there has been alot of problems with the aftermarket ones.
I have dealt with him even when there was a problem and he was very much wanting to make it right, which he did and quickly.

Yeah, I saw what everyone had said about the aftermarket cables. That's a shame. It's such a basic and vital piece, and it's ridiculous that our only option is cheap Chinese crap. I wish I knew why the hell the powers that be decided that it's too expensive to make things in our own damned country anymore...
Anyway, enough of my rant. I bookmarked the Third Gen Ranch. Thanks for the heads-up, Phoenix!

We also have Hawks and other good suppliers also. I do use ebay when it is most beneficial also.
As for why everything gets shipped overseas that is simple, to many people only think about cheapest price and not quality. Suprisingly we can compete laborwise but nobody for the powers that be are willing to look at smaller manufacturing companies.
