How do you to convert Gear driven speedo to a electric one.
I replaced my 89 Firebird engine and trans with a 89 Camaro engine and trans. Everthing works except the speedometer. The one that was in the camero was gear driven. The one in the Firebird electric. Is there any easy way to get this speedometer working right?

Its very easy. The speedo drive gear just needs to be poped out. Your going to need the old tranny because the speedo (gear) might be different. Take the 10mm bolt out of the speedo gear (on the tailshaft of tranny) and pull the cable driven gear drive out. Repeat on old tranny. Check the gear to see if it's the same color and has the same amount of teeth, if it does then just pop the electric speed sender unit in the new tranny, bolt it down then plug in and you set. If the amount of teeth do not match you going to have to pull the tailshafts off of both tranny's and get the gear off of the output shaft and replace.

I dont have the old trans though. If the gears are the same then I dont need it right? I just need the electric speed sender I hope.

I looked at vss and a cable driven gear and output shaft gear and they looked identical except for color (vss green) (cable blue) and of course the teeth count was different. I dident notice a difference but you probably better listen to Apeiron, I admit I dont really know squat about trannys but I could have swore the speedo gears were interchangeable.

The drive gears on the output shaft are the same, but the driven gears are different. Cable driven gears have a long shaft on them that goes through the speedometer gear housing, with a square hole at the end to drive the speedometer cable. Electronic driven gears have no shaft, just a keyed hole in the center.

!Damn! I had taken my car to astro transmission to fix this and they say yeah we will have it done buy today. Well that was yesterday the parts didnt come in or some bs. Today I get the car and they say we replaced the spedo gear and sensor but when you hit the gas the spedo goes 0 to 120 in 2 seconds. That causes the computer to read wrong and shuts off the car. WTF so they couldnt fix it and I still have to pay $ 150.00!! for parts and labor.
Now can someone here can help me either tell by telling me what went wrong or help me go over there and kick thire ***........ plan B. sounds real good.

ok I have some new info from http://www.autometer.com/hp/index.html
On thire tech tips they say if you buy the speedometer and calibrator then you can hook it dirrectly to the speed sensor. That means cutting out the computer. Now that might just be what I'm looking for because I beleive that computer is what is ****ing it up.
any objections ??? anybody out
