i was quoted at $800 to have mine rebuilt. 1300-1400 and they would supply and install a Transgo Shift Kit and TC. I think im just gonna go with a Pro Build HD tranny though.

I installed a 350 into my friends 76 jeep wagoneer that used a TH400 tranny behind the AMC 360. We got a TH400 for a chevy and took them both to the tranny shop. The bellhousing, shaft, and a few other things were different between the two. They charged him $175 to take the best of both and put them into the chevy TH400. So I would say about $200 if your parts kit is complete.

Two questions come to mind. A) Who is buying parts in case of a failure and B) Will this car get 'beaten on'?

Hey, just buy a Probuilt from dana. The heavy duty is only $1255 and from what I hear they're the best out there.

Lee Myles took my first one out, put a rebuilt trans in, and charged me $1300.

When that one died, a year and a half later (f--- them!!), I took the trans out myself, gave it to a "friend of a friend", who rebuilt it and charged me $380. Parts were about $250, the rest was labor. I put the trans back in myself.

What happens when this one goes? So far, it's been good for about 3 years. (And yep, it's going to, that 2-4 band is getting worse every day.)

I'll pull the trans. I'll rebuild it. I'll put it back in. I can't do much worse than the other guys that have tried! And I will NEVER eat $1300 on a trans from a generic trans store again!! A specialty store, yeah, but never again will I go to a shop like that.

Good luck...

I dont know....if I spend 300-400 dollers on parts...

i dont want to have to pay that much for it to be put together...may as well order a new tranny(performance upgraded)

Yeah =\

I brought a 700 r4 to a shop to have the output shafts switched. At first they said it was going to take about an hour and cost 75 bucks. Then after they took it all part they took me, just to change the output shaft, it would take a week and cost about 600.

I took the tranny home and did it my self, still in my car right now =)
It took me 2 hours.

I had my 700R4 rebuilt. It cost me $1400 which included going all high performance with a 2400 stall. They also gave me a one year unlimited mileage warranty. Nobody else around would even warranty a built trans. I love how it shifts, I just hope it lasts now.

The question is who is responsible for future break downs?
I built a th400 for a friend with his parts, it broke the intermediate roller clutch and he brought it back to me, I told him to buy a 34 element sprag type clutch, he got another stock roller clutch and it broke again so he brought it to me again. With the idea of th400 being used for everything from humvee's to moving vans he thought stock parts were adequate. Not with the b&m shift kit I advised against. Do you think I liked tearing his trans apart five times for free.
I own the trans now and it has a 4L80E direct drum and 34 element sprag, trans go shift kit and it's bullet proof, why? because the builder (me) put his recomended parts in it and used stuff he's familiar with and knows is reliable.

I think the shop you went to is adding some to cover their possibility of future repairs since they may be unaware of the quality of your selection of parts and they may not be familiar with all the modification procedures involved. I'd say find someone who's used to building 700's the way you want yours built.

I got mine from Gm for 1300 with a 3 year/50,000 warranty. And put it in myself for no labor cost. You got to be a certified mechanic tho to get your warranty. Being a mechanic can be good.

Do I dare let them choose the parts?

most mechanics will add a little on to the price of parts to get more money out of the customer.

Im going to call 3 others I know...see what they can do for me
