Best way to apply and use Carb and Choke cleaner?

Im a newbie at this, and i dont want to mess anything up. My car may or may not be racing at idle (it sounds a bit high though it is a carb) and i now have two full cans of it.. just changed Water Pump and Water Pump heater hose im good to go.. i will likely drive a bit today after i put in $3.69 a gallon gas, and i may attempt a carb cleaning.

What are some areas to spray it? Not to spray it? And why does it "kill" the engine for a second when sprayed down the carb throat?

Also got fresh fill of 5W-30 oil.. thanks!

Don't spray it in the carb while engine is running - you could have a backfire and set yourself on fire! Spray all inside the carb when car is off, to clean it. All it does is disolve any gelled-up fuel. Then, while engine running, spray around intake seals and vacuum hoses to see if you have any vacuum leaks - if the rpm's raise when you spray, you have a leak in that area.

Ditto on the fire hazard the stuff is flammable if memory serves, also its good for cleaning up carbon deposits on intake manifolds and TBs. If you're just looking to clean out deposits in the engine a bit get some seafoam for it and put that through the intake system, just be careful cause seafoam is quite flammable found that out the hard way and nearly lost an eyebrow.
