You can do it with a rattle can also if you do it right much cheaper but be sure you wet sand your wheels or it will just flake off and be a waste of time and money.

I did my recessed headlight area black like the z28s in july and there still perfect. it has with stood everything from sand to a** loads of rain and right not theres about 8 inches of snow and an inch of ice on my car i went out about 20 mins ago and knocked some of the ice and snow off and it still looks good.

But be sure to use good rattle can paint like the five to seven dollar stuff though. O'Rileys has duplicolor for about six bucks around here. Don't use that crappy 2 dollar crap

GL hope to see what they look like when your finished

Re: Has any one had their rims painted at a autobody shop??

Had my wifes crosslaces painted yellow to match her stripes, at the same time the whole car was repainted.

And I had my rear 2 Snypers powder coated black, when I had them widened from 9" to 11".

Not much sense in having 16's widened for street tires. All the street tires(like the BFG 295/50) will fit them perfectly fine. Been there & done that myself.

It was $200 per wheel (up to 3"). $150 if I supplied the donor wheel for widening. And the powder coating was $100 per wheel.

Re: Has any one had their rims painted at a autobody shop??

You may want to look into powder coating, there are a ton of custom coaters in your area. Powder has a lot of advantages to paint and should be cheaper. Anything that can be done in paint on rims can be done in powder, here are some examples I have done in the past year

Satin black centers, Gloss black lip, Red stripe

I am not sure what they are, I didnt see a name on them....... they were tore up a little (curb rash) and in pretty crappy shape. He also wanted the backs of the spokes and hub in red for contrast when viewed through the spokes ....they are going on a bagged, mini tubbed S-10

I only do coating in our local metro area, I dont do any mail order but if you want a referance to general pricing for custom coating we have a price list on our web site,

To do the red and black you should be paying around $85 for two stage and $20 masking so $105 per rim plus stripping if needed.

Re: Has any one had their rims painted at a autobody shop??

What would be recommended for crosslace rims? My painter was hesitant to paint them since there are so many little nooks to get into. I wanted to have the crosslaces match my paint, but it has a course metallic flake in it. Can that be matched with Powder Coating?

Any professional coater with a high end coating system will have no problem with nooks and crannys. As far as metallics thats mostly what we shoot and 95% of the time we can match a color (our supplier has over 6500 colors).....I just finished a set of 03 Cobra valve covers matching the Ford factory Sun Fire Red color and recently perfectly matched on a set of rims the Chrysler 300 Black Metallic, both of those colors are high end metallics. Any good custom coater in your area should have no problem.

Very cool. I had no idea that you could get a metallic flake in a powdercoat until today. What would you expect to pay a good shop to match a metallic color on crosslace rims?

since any metallic powder has to have a clear powder top coat, it would be a two stage job (and assuming no polished lip) I would expect it to be in the
$85-$95 range for each rim plus stripping if needed (we charge $20 per rim for chemical stripping)

Re: Has any one had their rims painted at a autobody shop??

Just to add, powder has come a long way just in the last couple of years......I can use all of the HOK pearls and flake in the powder just the same as in paint, our supplier offers exact paint to powder color matching using a sample piece with the paint color on it, there are illusion and flip powder colors that are as good as any paint I have seen also.

Here is a fatboy rim that I did in a color called Tropic Black....it is a brilliant green metallic to bronze to black flip (very hard to get pictures of how awesome this flips)

still doing the trial and error on mine, only have about 30 bucks in it so far (not to mention about 20 hours of elbow grease) but you should have seen these things before. Rusted, one gold, one gray its hard to tell in this pic but the aluminum on the front is close to mirror. Of course its not chrome but aluminum will shine enough to see your reflection in it.

Re: Has any one had their rims painted at a autobody shop??

Flirtin1, I'm really amazed by that! I have polished the lip already on 2 of my rims and roughed up the painted section in preparation for paint. Does Aircraft Stripper get the job done to remove the paint and have it ready for powder, or is an industrial chemical stripper required? Can a shop just tape off the already polished lip to do the powdercoating on the center section only?

Re: Has any one had their rims painted at a autobody shop??

Yes the aricraft stripper (walmart) will work, what they sell is a very watered down version of what we have in a bulk tank, so it takes a lot more time/effort to do it that way but it will work. As far as the polished lip there is usally a additional masking charge per rim that will vary depending on long/hard it take to mask the area you want left polished. The final stage of clear powder should be applied after the masking is removed so you wind up with even the polished areas covered with clear which is nice for no more polishing

Re: Has any one had their rims painted at a autobody shop??

Nice! I was wondering if you could put clear powdercoat over polished aluminum rims. (to protect them from brake dust and what not) If I had polished rims powdercoated clear, would I be able to remove the clear down the road, if I ever wanted the rims colored? Good work by the way, those are all some pretty wild looking wheels!

To the original question, I had my rims painted to match my car years back (when I had my car painted) and they came out real nice. But the first time I had my tires changed, the jerks managed to chip each and every rim! The paint was thick enough that touch ups looked horrible, so I just stripped them and spray painted them silver/grey. Not sure of the cost since they painted them with the car, but it has to be more expensive then the powdercoating prices listed. I never realized powdercoating was that affordable.

flirtin, i have a question on the rims you painted. Why paint the part that gets covered by the tire? just seems like a waste of materials to me.
that fatboy is really sick. when i first saw the pic i thought the outer part was all black and only the inside was green.

Re: Has any one had their rims painted at a autobody shop??

I painted my rims Black Silver metallic. Stripped the clear coat. Wet sanded. Used 2 coats of rattle can self etching primer. wet sand in between coats. Went to Bens paint supply here in the Orlando area and got Shopline paint. its made by ppg. It cost me about 40.00 for a pint of the Black Silver metallic. sprayed it with a hplv spry gun. 2 coats. and it looks awesome!! Check out the picture i attatched.

Yup i tried the polishing thing. Looked good. but it was so much work that i couldnt get it shiny enough for my liking so i decided to just paint mine Black Silver Metallic.

I am not sure what you are asking........your best bet would be to do a search for custom coaters in your local area contact several of them and see what the price range is.

that fatboy is really sick. when i first saw the pic i thought the outer part was all black and only the inside was green.
By the time you wrap the lip edge around far enough to be past the tire bead you have most of it covered anyway so just a finishing touch, plus on steel rims after they are stripped to bare metal, I do it so if the tire ever gets moisture in it they wont ever rust from the inside and screw the bead seal up.

To answer your question.....the powdercoat is a coating that is sprayed on with help of electro magnetic force..then bake'd in the oven. If u wnat it to stay on there it has to be seamless !!!!
Thats why.
flrtin1 NICE JOB by the way !!!!!!
