Blower from a movie question

Hi all,
I saw in an 80's movie a GTO that had big ol' blower on it that the driver could engage and disengage while driving. Is this a real option or just a Hollywood effect? Cause I've never seen anything like it in Summit or Jegs

The problem with this is (roots style) that once the blower disengages, the vanes basically shut off air flow to the engine.

Now a centrifugal blower could be disengaged and allow the engine to still suck air. An A/C clutch system might work, but the factory clutch is rated for something like 5 hp. It takes 50+ hp to turn superchargers.

Actually the rotors will still spin. I broke my motor in with the belt off and I was shocked at how fast the rotors spun with no belt. It idled fine and was even some what responsive.

I stand corrected. Good tip about breaking in the engine, the "disconnect the blower part".

I have a 383 with a ATI going in a boat. I'll first break in the engine and then add the belt.

I saw a car in motortrend that used an electromagnet to engage and disengage a centripical style supercharger.
