Re: wat ignition with nitrous

mallory 685..has start retard, rev limiter, window switch, and a nitrous retard built in and is cheaper than an msd unit.

Re: wat ignition with nitrous

I just got my MSD digital 6. All that stuff about the mallory is true, but I haate them now. I have a mallory dizzy and had a mallory 6-AL box. Box arrived to my house faulty, and the dizzy has been a bit of a headache. I just hate how I can't get the damn wires on and off without loosening the in cap coil. Also when you install their box, it doesn't come with everything you need. You need to buy little "kits" of wire. I made my own, but still...stupid.

MSD comes with everything you need, including the rubber mounts, everything needed to install in an afternoon. Even a screwdriver to adjust all the knobs. Great product and I can't wait to use it.

I also got an MSD billet dizzy to go along with it. Both parts look amazing.

Re: wat ignition with nitrous

yeah if money that tight, then go with the digital 6 and a window switch. The only reason i went that route was because i already had the pro-billet dizzy and a window switch, but everyone i know that have the 685 like it..never heard anything negative like dennis stated.

No I am not saying anything negative about the 685. I am just saying I am kinda pissed at Mallory for sending me a faulty box, thats all.

I use an MSD-6AL and MSD Timing Computer.

Not really cost effective but for both look to spend $500 or so

Re: wat ignition with nitrous

not too bad. I spent $320 on my digital box.

Is the timing computer better/more adjustable than the digital box?

Is it true that for every 50 HP of N20 you pull one degree of timing?

I heard that for every 25 after 75hp you have to retard it 2*..... may be incorrect though....

Re: wat ignition with nitrous

well I just need something that will retard the timing when i hit my 100 shot and stay advanced otherwise. Its(the nitrous) trigured by a button on my hurst shifter. So that will work with the msd 6 I assume? Now if i were to get that mallory, I would have to get a mallory coil instead of the msd I have too then right? I just recntly bought the car with the nitrous and I'm gettin this bad boy ready for my nitrous.

I have heard good things about the mallory unit.... do you have the remote mount coil? if so I don't believe that you need to change the coil....

A knock sensor simulator activated by the nitrous button would cause the ECM to retard timing. It would be cheap too.

Re: wat ignition with nitrous

I don't know of a commercial unit that is available, but I simulate the knock sensor on my ECM testbench all the time. Maybe you can find someone selling one associated with the megasquirt stuff. I don't sell stuff. I do it in my spare time for fun.

Re: wat ignition with nitrous

For those of you who were curious the rule of thumb (but not in every case) is 2* per 50hp shot, or of course 1* PER 25hp. This is just to get a general idea, though checking you're plugs and running a wideband would be the best method for obvious reasons.

Re: wat ignition with nitrous

Thanks for the rule of thumb. I will remeber that. i am starting off with a 150, so I guess i will dial in 3* for now and tell my wideband to data log the shot to see how I do. Thanks. By this time next week I should have all my ign. stuff in and my first try at N20. Can't wait to post what i think. haha. Later
