So Loner made the 3hr drive down here on Thursday to install his turbo, got here about noon and drove home this morning about the same time (Sat).
It was a long 2 days, we didn't go to sleep until 2am Fri, got up at 8 and went right back at it. Pulled an all-nighter and it was running shortly after dawn.
Here's the startup...
Here's the first and second test drive after we overcame a couple of snags (coupler never tightened, and a coupler blew off)...
We used the prototype turbo headers I build for him a couple of months ago and fabbed everything else while the car was here.
He didn't hesitate to make the 3hr drive home after and only had a few minor details to work out.

Haven't seen snow since 1988 , well actually it did "snow" in the Tampa Bay area in 1989 (now live in FtLauderdale area).

It was nice to have all the machines for this install. On my first turbo kit, everything was mad by hand/drill press. We had to make the collector flanges, and the mill was nice tol make the holes in the pipes for the WG etc. Just wish I wouldn't have let the TIG go. We had a chance to pick up a nie Miller for $450, but our friend sold it for much more before we came up with the cash , so everything was done with a flux-core buzzbox.
There are a couple things I would change though:
-move the MAF sensor to an area away from the heat. The heat soak that will occur where it is, will throw off the caluclations.
-build a heat sheild around the turbine housing, even with the MAF moved and just tube pasing the turbine, a heat sheild is still a good idea.
-I would also swap out that factory flex tubing at the TB, it's not designed for positive pressure and will balloon pretty good.
You were supposed to send me pics when you got up, you're off the christmas card list now.

There's lots of thing that could have been done better, but in the time frame we had, we made do.
If you look close at the pics, the compressor housing coupler is 2" with a piece of 2.5" on top because we didn't have a 2" t-bolt clamp to fit, and the I/C never got a mounting bracket. The hood needs pins now because the latch support had to be cut to fit tha massive same-side I/C.
When I got up from my nap (1-6pm, lol) I loaded the pics and was loged on anyways, lol.
Yes, the MAF isn't happy, but the 3hr test-drive home proved that. The trans is also a little warm, but may have been we lost a little fluid during the install and remembered when he was on the way. Added a qt, and it helped, but still reading high.
Againg the heat shields were on the list, but him and his friend had to be home today. They still had that drive, and I only had to go 12mi - I'm sure they are crashed out by now, haha
About the flex, again it was time. He already knows the MAF has to be moved (notice the wrap), and I'll make sure he uses some couplers with a pipe for the IAT etc.

EDIT: Actually I'm surprised you didn't mention the functional EGR, and now you reminded me the PCV still needs a catch can.

Yeah I know how things get when time doesn't really allow for the entire job. A few years ago, a friend helped me swap his 1992 Cavalier from a 3.1 auto to a 3.1 5 speed in a weekend. I know that doesn't sound like much, be we had to swap entire drivelines, due to the bad engine inthe recipent car, we also used a 1990 Cavalier for a donor, and the harnesses, are QUITE different. I didn't realize how different the harnesses were until part way through and even moreso when he called me and said "I have no wipers", yeah the addition of ABS in those cars changes the harnesses a great deal. I ended up modifying dash harness to feed the wiper wires through the driver side like the donor car had. In the way he left, the right rear ABS sensor was connected to the wiper motor.
I hadn't noticed or had clicked that there was still a function EGR, besides that's just a given for me, I like to keep all that stuff. I may even add the emisions equipment to my project vehicle. Hopefully I'll have that by fall, maybe even sooner.
I couldn't believe you guys were going to try to do this "mail order" previously. Helps when you have the car to build it, doesn't it?
Actually he was going to have a local shop do it, but they quoted him $5000 not including the headers. For another $1k they were going to make some logs -*so* the origional plan was just for me to make the headers.
Then I was going to drive up there to do the welding and he was going to send the pipes to be coated, but I'm glad he came to the shop. It was much easier to make things there with access to the mill etc.
I just wish I had more time and I could have made jigs to re-produce the kit. I'm sure there are Berretta/Corssica owners who would want a "bolt-on. We also managed to make side-exit mendrel exhaust in the process of all this (he previously had 2.25" krinkle bent).
I've got some logs in my backyard I could sell for $1k, but those are for the fire lol. They'd probably help hp numbers about the same as the 'logs' that shop wanted to sell him.

Brian, definately. You need to see the new shop. In that 48hrs we also had to make the header flanges and move the 02 bungs etc. Again, it was nice having the machines right there (only used the manual machines, the CNC's still have some quirks to work out)

^ Not freaking fair, as some of these member's are asking me to pull the damn A/C delete pulley off of my '91 Formula to be included with the Serpentine Setup that I'm offering, so I'll have to "push" the damn car all the way to Florida to somehow beat this other guy there LMAO.! By the way, I like the title of the company! Bring on the stickers bro, as they're going right on my car for next season (despite running with a V8 LOL), which is only three freaking months away!!!!! YAY <insert little girlie man voice>

Tell them that they don't NEED a delete pulley! A shorter belt and re-routing it can take care of that.

Actually if Brian is serious about a kit, he lives close enough where we can do the install, take it back off and we'll set up a jig at the shop to mass-produce them. I know there are a lot of V8 guys who would be interested in a "more affordable" turbo pipe kit to cut down on the fabrication.
Oh yes. You can fabricate the kit around the stock LB9 engine, and once that's fabbed, in goes the Motown 454. That A/C delete in the pic is brand spanking new, but I honestly don't mind including it into the Serpentine Setup that I'm selling, as it allows for me to place a turbo charger there in it's place. We'll have to trim down the ear of the bracket, and get a new belt sized, but's that's pretty simple. I just want to get the EBL installed first, learn the system, then when the T88 goes on the engine, give it a base tune....

Im serious John.... Let me know a price and I will see what I can save up.... I think it would be awesome to help make a starting point for a V8 kit....if that makes any sense... got any spare turbos lying around???
Rob, the problem with making on that deletes the A/C may turn off some customers. When you say "Motown" I'm guessing you mean the SBC 455?
Brian, none extra that would work for a single SBC setup. We can use the Garrett copies to make the kit, though, to save some cash.
I'll try to come up with a ball-park figure for the parts and we can go from there. Probably use mild steel and/or weld elbows for headers also to help the cost. I don't like logs, so I'd rather them not be in the pic.
Rob, the problem with making on that deletes the A/C may turn off some customers. When you say "Motown" I'm guessing you mean the SBC 455?
Yes, the Motown 454 SBC will hopefully find it's way in there by February/March, provided I get the Z06 sold by then, which I'm sure I will. You think I should keep the A/C delete pulley? It's very tight in the engine bay, there's literally no room between the waterpump and the radiator. We could extend the turbo in front of the coolant resevoir though.....

People have success with a t70 IIRC on the 350's. Haven't done much research on the SBC's and boost to be honest. It would take a while to sit and calculate the airflow requirements so look around to see what works good and we can mimick it.

sounds good man... you are the man.... You probably know alot more about this stuff than I do..... take your time man.... I gotta get rid of some stuff anyways... but I really wanna do something with this.... I am thinking about selling my nitrous system to help fund the turbo setup....although I wouldn't have anything to help with takin care of the mustangs and so forth in the mean time.... I am in no hurry... just let me know what I could do...

Sorry, Didnt mean to point that out and mess up your logo Although its kinda better to catch that sort of thing now........ It is a cool design though. Just needs the right motor.
