Which of these turbos is best for a 383 single application?
Ok ive done more research on the proper turbo for a single 383.What ive come up with is a small list of t4 flange turbos. someone said 1.00 A/R compressor size would do well in a 383 with single turbo? well heres a list of some turbos that may work well on a 383. what is you guys 2cents on the best turbo from this list? or if you could post what turbo isnt on this list that i should check into.
T4 GT66
.81 A/R vband flange.
Site claims the turbo has a 4" exhaust outlet.
T4 60-1 borg warner .60 COLD , .80 HOT , 3" EXHAUST OUTLET
T5 stage 5 compressor wheel
T4 super monster setup
60-1 wet floating ball bearings
turbine housing .60
compressor housing a/r 1.15
50mm wastegate
7.8-19psi
also comes with a 50mm bov

Im not looking for a cheap ebay turbo.But i dont wanna pay 2k for one turbo....if all these r wrong what is right? what u r saying is going against everything iver heard.....please explain.and some good turbo suggestions would b appreciated.

by all means im not saying dont use a cheap ebay turbo, i have run one for 4 years almost on my car..
but ive also done my research and had multiple ebay model turbos in my hands.
so i know what they actually spec out to.
ebay turbos dont match what they call them
i.e the t70's well some are 70mm turbos
but the majority of them are 52-55 mm units which are way to small for a sb 383

i would go with the second turbo i listed above or the gt45 which is a copy of a master power gt42

the guys on ebay dont know anything about turbos, they buy the stuff form chinia or were ever and just put it up with whatever there told or they see on the turbo
take for instance the t04e 57 trim turbos they are really 48 trim the wheel sizes do not match what they say
a t70 turbo has a 70mm inducer on the compressor wheel, the ebay ones fopr the majority have 55 mm wheels, there are a few diff models named t70
for instance the old xspower super t70 which has a t3 hotside is really a t3/t61 turbo has a 61mm inducer
while others have a t4 hotside with a ptrim wheel and a 69mm wheel, those are copys of master power t70s which spec out the same
u cannot go buy what they tell u in the auctions u just have to know what they are in order to get the proper sized one

Major bummer! I am looking for a turbo and I am just getting more confused!! I am considering giving up as there are not many places that I have found to learn this stuff. Does trim refer to the pitch of the blades? I posted a new thread to try to collect some more info as a lot of people in our club are interested but we all have the same problem: We all dont know jack about turbo's!! Thank you project89!

from my experience and my current combo do not go smaller than a t-76. I got mine used off theturboforums for 800 bucks and it is a turbonetics ceramic ballbearing that was 2800 new. It had low miles and came with tons of extra pipe and flanges all for 800 so shop around. If you strap a 70 or smaller to that big inch motor your exhaust temps will cook everyting under the hood as I am having problems with it and the bigger one but think my downpipe may be the cause of it. seeing trap speeds over 135 with 10 lbs on my setup now in my heavy fully loaded with a/c still 92 formula. I have pics all over of the car in stages of building it. just search my name and posts i did if you want to see it from nothing to done.

Not true. The turbine/fuel/timing has more to do with EGT than compressor size.

you talk about egt I am having problems with mine being terribly high not sure of exac temp but it will glow the whole hot side in one pass. Not sure why though. not to hijack the thread. i do have this listed and sorry guys.

What kind of mufflers and pipe are after the turbo? I would get a $5 - $10 air gauge and tap it into the exhaust to check what the back pressure is first.
What is the timing control, mechanical or EFI? Have you verified the timing at 24* if mechanical?
What model WBO2 is reading 11 AFR? Do the plugs match the WBO2 reading?

i have a cheap cherry bomb that is just like the old flowmaster one chamber. only thing i could find at the time so used it. loud and not sure of back pressure. what is a good muffler that will quiet it some and be non restrictive. thinking of a ultra flow bullet. I run a single 3 inch down pipe to that muffler than a dump and thats it for now. it turns out under the pass door. all 3 inch pipe. I use code 59 so it is like factory timing control efi stuff. I have a inovative wide band and the plugs actually look good. no detionation at all but they are red in color from the nos octaine boost i ran in it so hard to read. they are not rich at all but not lean either. maybe that muffler is more restrictive than I thought. will order one tonight if someone says what to get.

Check out the Dynomax website and download their catalog. It lists the muffler flow CFM and approx. HP the muffler can support. Dynomax is one of the few that flow test their mufflers and publish the data. Pick a muffler that supports you desired HP range and sound. More than likely you will end up with an ultra-flow 3.5" unit.

For a Single 383 your gonna want at least around a 76mm. I went with a Garrett TH08A64 (detroit diesels) 74MM T6 with a .96A/R on my 383. I am still in the process of building it (i have a post on CZ28.com under the FI section)
A T6 is hard to fit BUT it does fit in the battery location!
For Single I would say S400 T6 1.32AR
For twins I would go with 2 Master Power T70 with the .61A/R
Here is my build sooo far, just pulling the motor tomorrow for paint, cam and built the hot side.

Most of the BBS kits i've seen recommend a 76mm or so single turbo but T-62's i think for twins, somewhat smaller A/R's. .6's i think.
how much bigger is a T6 flange over the T4? I have a T4 header from BBS coming and S400 would be awesome but its T6
Im hoping for around 600RWHP until i upgrade the wheel to a 88MM
The t6 is very large, with my mez. electric pump and having that stupid 3rd gen steering box it pretty much wont fit anywhere without moving the rad forward ALOT, so I am most likly stuck putting it in the battery tray(just fits). Im gonna try mock up once more tomorrow before I yank the motor.
