Pre-turbo exhaust done!

See what everyone thinks of this. Used my shortie headers I've had for years followed with 3" pipe per side, and 3.5" pipe when both sides combine.

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

Wow, that's different than what most people do. How are you going to support the weight of the turbo? Have you measured the ground clearance to the 3-1/2" tube? Are you going to be able to use the stock radiator mounting? It looks great, keep us posted.

A side note, I'd love to see your car sometime when it's done.

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

I'm probably going to make a bracket that bolts onto the two water pump bolts and the exhaust housing to handle most of it, but I'll likely also support the exhaust flange and the pipe going to it for added strength. The bottom of that pipe is about the same as the bottom of the air deflector for the radiator. A stock water pump doesn't fit with the turbo there, but I'll have that covered by using a remote mount electric one. The radiator does sit in its normal place, but with no room for the fans to be on it. Looks like I'm going to get rid of that air deflector and move the radiator down 6-7 inches and forward 3-4. I go out to Thompson Raceway Park pretty frequently if you ever want to make it there. I could go to Quacker City too, which I believe is closer to you.

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

Just my .02 but isn't the turbo flange awful thin.

It looks like there may be some sealing issues with that set-up.

My turbo flange was cut out of 1/2" then milled flat.

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

Sweet I thought of doing that but didnt think there would be room under the K member...I am putting mine in front of the motor and built a merge for it.

Building either logs or the traditional turbo header setup.(i have a header kit on the way)

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

looks like a nice project. if its not enough clearance you could always use Dr.Gas oval tubbing under the k ememer.

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

Thinking I might put some gussets onto the turbo flange, or I could just as easily cut out another flange and weld that to the one already on there. What I'm more worried about right now is fitting my 5" pipe also under the k-member, but on the other side. Planning on some cutting/welding on the k-member to do that.

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

I ran my setup on my 2nd gen under the subframe and it worked out good. I drove it about 3000 miles last summer and with most of the pipes under the car it cuts down on underhood heat.

Here is a link, its a long read but it might give ya some ideas....

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

That is a Precision Turbo 91mm rated at 1550hp. Externally, it's the same size as the 114mm rated for 2400hp. Wastegate has a 10psi spring in it, but I plan to eventually use probably upper teens/lower 20's. I was looking to size it so I could go up to 30psi should I get stupid, haha.

Re: Pre-turbo exhaust done!

At the moment this motor has a spun bearing, and I discovered a broken and beaten piston that explains some oddities that began a year ago. In the mean time I'll be tinkering with the 305 that will be seeing for the first time the th400 with trans brake, fuel injection, and the turbo.
