Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

Yeah i've been doing the under 5K miles thing for last 3 years i think, possibly 4. Its nice

I got my manifolds back from finish welding this past weekend. Mocked it all back up and the wastegate flanges warped/moved. SO i redid them. Cut and rewelded the flange on once side and bent the other side in abit more to even the gap. I'll run a bigger gasket on the one side since the gap is alittle larger.

Going Victor EFI now. Waiting for my custom sheetmetal intake elbow to come in. Then i can finish the feed pipe with blow off valve. Went with a Tial 50mm in red. Should look good in there.

Going to pick up the TH400 trans Friday and start to get that swap in order.

Fuel system is being built right now. Changed my plans to a dual intank pump setup in a LS1 4th gen fuel tank since the opening is bigger and can fit dual pumps easier. SHould work well, there are guys with 1000whp on that stuff. Doing -8 feed line, -6 return.

Motor block is at machine shop finally after long backorder wait. My pistons should be in tomorrow or Friday so he can finish balancing the assembly and fit into block for final prep. Then its shipped off to my house for assembly. Hope i get it here by end of may to first week of june. I want this thing running mid june so i can start tuning it all up.

So far so good

It's not the prettiest hood, but the Jongbloed (SP?) hood might clear the turbos and the intake elbow....

Is there any way you could drop the whole engine with shorter motor mounts?

maybe... i'm not sure how far down you could go with it tho. I was thinking of asking Spohn about a custom kmember with drop mounts... but even if i got it down 1.5-2" i dont know if that would be enough.

IF you look close in the pic of my elbow a few posts up, you can see the wastegates are right next to the downpipes. The wastegate caps point towards the intake elbow

Just fabbed up the blowoff valve mount today on the main feed pipe. Its a TIAL 50mm. We'll see how it works out.

I updated my first page with the mods list since some things changed since that post

It will be hard for me to imagine the power going to the wheels from Orr's twin turbo motor. This will be a serious street car on steroids. Orr you are going to need some serious rubber on the back tires to put that power to the ground.

With my own car I'm almost to the point of wondering how much power can I use. Just at my power level I easily burn through 1st gear. I was trying to find the 1-2 shift point rpm of my new 4L60E and I could not do it. Anything near WOT and the tires break loose. I decided to take the 2-3 rpm spread and add 50 for the 1-2 shift.

I have no intention of using 1st or 2nd gears on this thing I'm not even gonna wire up the kickdown on the Th400. I'm gonna start in 3rd from any roll speed and hope it hooks. I got 295's out back that are pretty sticky, but the nitrous 383 broke them loose sometimes on cold roads at 40-50mph hits. I figure another 200hp would smoke them

The waterneck i have right now i dont even know what brand it is. I bought it for the stealth ram swap, since it had the angle needed. I may keep it or go to a nicer swivel one, i'm not sure yet.

I bought the intake elbow with a 3" rise to clear the waterneck and it turns out i could have used a 2" rise just fine like i was gonna go with. Oh well, just need a slightly bigger hood now

I hope so, depends on how much boost i can get off the line. I was gonna run a trans brake and 2 step to help that but not doing that anymore...atleast not this year. I want this thing on the road as soon as i can get it running.

Motor block was thru cnc today and the rotating assembly was balanced. Should ship end of this week and i'll have it by end of next week hopefully

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

Motor was suppose to be here today but probly will be in tomorrow.

Ordered a PTC converter for this setup that should kick butt. Also picked up a harwood 4" cowl to clear the intake manifold. 3" would have done it I think but didnt find a 3" i liked and this was local so i couldnt pass it up.

Turbos wont stick out quite as far as i thought, and if i was to move them over towards the throttle body 6 inches...basically hanging over the valve covers or out in front and over the waterpump/etc, they would sit under the cowl just fine. Half the housing will be under cowl, half outside the hood. May have someone make a piece to cover it

I was thinking of 8-10 lbs on the street on pump gas and 15-20 at the track on a 93/race gas mix with meth injection, depends on how much i can get away with on pump gas tho. If it will take 15lbs on pump gas and meth I will run that on the street

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

Some crappy cell phone pics of the motor mockup real quick. Flanges on the header seem to be slightly warped but do pull in abit once tightened up. I think it will seal ok with copper rtv and copper gasket. I plan to use that setup.

Shortblock is together, just need to install the cam/heads. Oil pan is on its way so when that comes in I can put that on and its just about ready to drop in. Gotta order a flexplate/starter since I cant find a flex plate for a 11.5 bolt pattern converter and 153 tooth starter like stock, so gotta get me a ministarter for a 168 tooth wheel. Sucks...

I'm currently out of money... Gotta pickup the fuel system stuff Friday which has turned out to be much more money than I had anticipated so I'm drained for alittle while.

I think I'm going to run without manifold coating for a little while til the tune is good and I have determined these manifolds have no leaks. Once thats done, I'll tear it down for coating since it doesnt take long at all to get the manifolds off.

You could bring the headers to a machine shop and they can true them. I am too cheap for that so I put them in the vice and very carefully grind down the high spot and then file them. After that I true them using a long board and 80 grit emery followed by 120 grit emery cloth. It takes 1-2 hours per side depending on how bad they are. I tend to do a little bit on them each night over a week span. Before you know it they are done.

Yes, I could run them without straightening them as the header bolts will pull them straight. I think that is fine for NA setups, but with turbo exh. back pressure I like to have them perfectly flat. They need all the help they can get from blowing out exh. gaskets. I also run Percy carbon fiber XXX (extreme heat turbo) gaskets which are very thin to begin with.

What is the static compression ratio and cam specs?

I would not be surprised if you can run 12 - 15PSI with that aftercooler and a meth. injection setup using 93 octane if your compression is under 9.5:1. Just keep an eye on your timing. Once you get to the point you have to keep pulling it to raise boost it just isn't worth having more boost.

Well my flange is more bowed/bent not really warped i guess. Warped to me is wavy, this is just slightly bowed since I believe the final welding of the tubes made it tweak into the bowed shape. Middle ports appear to seal good, just one of the ends isnt quite flush but pulls in with bolt. It needs bent back/straightened i guess rather than machined flat but i'll look into that. Its hard to tell how much material needs taken off to get them perfectly true.

Motor is 9 to 1 with a 233/233 at .050 cam on a 112 lsa. I think 10lbs boost or so on pump gas will easily get this car back into the mid lower 10's that it was doing last year on spray. High boost stuff will be for the mid 9's and getting kicked out the track.

Wow this is sick. I promise if I don't wreck my car by the time I'm making money, I'll clone this set up as well as possible.

Only problem is I live in California. Any way I can do this 50-state legal?

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

Spec'n your build.

Just for comparsions to my setups you will probably be really good with the 60 P Trim Turbo.

I am running two (PTE) T4 PT 52 (Buick GN) turbos with a .59 ar so that they will reach full spool at 3200-3400 rpms in 4th gear.

I have made 850 rwhp (1k bhp) at 18#s boost using my 347cid motor. At 400 cid you will have plenty of exhaust gas energy to push those turbos with a .69 ar on the hot side.

You were way better off with your header design verses a log style manifold as well.

My cam is a 224/224 .581 114 lsa Comp Xer that I have used with both my Centri SC, my first TT kit and my current TT kit.

My downpipes are 2 7/8" running into the stock midpipe and cat back.

A friend of mine who got the same kit after I did..broke into the high 9s @ 145 mph on 17" C5 wheels with Nitto DRs...running with a 347 cid and an Auto.

I have a 6 speed because I didn't want to convert to an auto...autos rule with turbos..no doubt.

When will you be selling this kit? I would put it on my bird.

Check my sig for pics of my power adder kits...and evolution.

haha not sure if i'll ever sell the setup but I do have a single turbo manifold i'm trying to unload.

LSx motors seem to be different when it comes to boost. They seem to make more power than sbc's with similar setups. If i can reach 850whp with 18 lbs or so I'd be extremely happy

If you have pics of your single turbo manifold/header shoot them my way. I am interested in giving my 91 bird a little more scoot.

Thanks

Your build looks great too.

Not posative but I would be willing to bet that's due to the fact that LSXs have a 17 or 18 degree head opposed to the traditional 23 degree sbc head. This lets them flow more air thus making more power. Which should be even more pronounce when forced induction is applied to them. Awesome build man I'm looking forward to see how this goes for you since your building the car I wish I could, but can't since I still have another year left to finish my degree.

This weekend I had thurs, friday off so i got started on the exhaust.

3" downpipes into 3" ypipe. Vband connections joining them.

merging into the old y collector from my last year exhaust. 3" inlets to 4" single outlet.

Dynomax muffler from last year in the same location except i raised the back end up alittle more to tuck it under the car more. Hung low last year but never really bottomed out. This year its up abit more and so is the front so i should have no problems with bottoming out on most roads/bumps
