Blower Question

A friend of mine has a 1989 IROC-Z with the L98 5.7L TPI motor. We were thinking of ways to increase power and we like the idea of supercharging but are not fond of the centrifugal superchargers so we were looking at roots blowers but we aren't sure what kind to look at. The car is fuel injected so that will probably make finding a roots blower difficult if not impossible but if anyone has any info we could use, please share. Thanks

Re: Blower Question

roots blower are for carburetors. he will need to get rid of the fuel injection. i am running a Weiand 8-71 blower on a 489 stroker which made 815 horsepower with smaller primary headers. i love the look and the flat torque curve i have with it.

Re: Blower Question

Hmm...any other positive displacement options, like a twin-screw Maggie or something?

What about any good nitrous kits? perhaps we could do that instead.

Re: Blower Question

Couldn't throttle body injection work?
Either way a centrifugal blower will give you more power and efficiency

Re: Blower Question

lol the car already sounds like it has a centrifugal supercharger on it at idle. We could go nitrous I suppose...I mean the car is getting about 12-14 mpg as it is. Possibly less now because he was out driving and there was a loud banging and a loss of power and he thought it was a gasket but ended up being a bad injector and it caused it to misfire so he got new injectors and is having fun with it since it pulls harder now.

The car already has a very mild cam, custom ram-air, stage 2 700R4 transmission, bored to 355 and i think a catback exhaust as far as performance. We would be looking to hit about 400hp probably. I want him to look into the TPiS Mini-Ram intake manifold but its kind of expensive

Re: Blower Question

Haha yeah it probably does need a tune. No offense to anyone here but he bought it from a black guy that really didn't take the greatest care of the vehicle...my friend bought it for like $3,200. Maybe we could use a custom chip too.

Re: Blower Question

get a magna charger its basically an eaton supercharger...they are hybrid roots...they work similar to both a screw and a roots charger...when ur not on the throttle they wont make any pressure increasing ur mpg and not creating heat...but when your on it they are much more effeicent then a roots...from what ive heard they work great with fuel injection...infact they get more hp with fuel injection then they do carb'd...so id check them out...also whipple has a few that are fuel injected...so id check them out too...just do your research...they work fine with fuel injection...just got to get it dialed in and the setups for fuel inject cost way more then the carb'd setups...ive even heard about the weiand 142's running on fuel injection with no probs...it all depends on what kind of fuel injection setups your running and your computer...etc etc...all about how big your pockets are...besides that nothing really impossible when it comes to cars...

Re: Blower Question

Ok thanks, I will look into it.

Does anybody know of any good videos of nitrous on third gen camaros? (Preferably 5.7L 350's but it really doesn't matter)

Re: Blower Question

Centrifical chargers are cool too.You won't feel it much around town but make a few passes at the track and it'll pull like a freight train.

Re: Blower Question

The car would probably only go to the track sparingly, it would mostly be for street driving. We were talking about maybe taking it on a rally once we are satisfied that the car will take it.
