Powerstroke 7.3L turbo on 383?

I have a 9.5cr 383 that is going into my Camaro project. I have stumbled accross a old style powerstroke turbo that i can pick up for free. Im wondering if i can use it to push about 9lbs on my motor. it is a Garrett turbo and the numbers on it are: A/R .70 M43 aa1994. Is it too small to work on my motor? Also it has a bolwoff valve that looks to be vaccum operated and it is mounted on the turbo itself. How would i adjust boost with that? This is just a shot in the dark, I was looking for a t-70 or t-76 but this kinda fell into my lap. Just wondering if it would be worth it.

I cant seem to find info on that specific turbo. But thew vaccum thing on it should be a wastegate not a BOV. Since you say its the old style I am guessing it is not electronic like the newer ones.

If it doesn't work for your car I might be interested in it for a 97 Ford Powerstroke that has a bad turbo.

I don't know anything about turboing a small block, but my 96 Powerstoke will make 25 LBS of boost at 2800 rpm. Thats on a 444 cubic inch motor.

Re: Powerstroke 7.3L turbo on 383?

Thanks for the quick replys guys. Im new to turbos, so what is the difference between a waistgate and a blow off valve? As far as boost, I am going for 9lbs, 13lbs max. Will i have to use like a 5oMM BOV ontop of the waistgate to acheive propper boost?

Re: Powerstroke 7.3L turbo on 383?

It will work, you just won't be happy with it IMO. It is a T3 flange turbo with a 1.15AR on the exaust side. If you are looking for big power it would be best to get like a Master Power T76 for a 383. The free part is pretty good though. Thing is, if you want to build some good power with a better turbo later, you'll have to cut the crossover apart to build for the T4 or T6 turbo you want.

The Blow Off Valve releases the pressure on the intake side of the system when the trottle body closes.

A waste gate is used on the exhaust side of the system to control the amount of boost that the turbo makes.

Those are very basic explanations, but a search should help you out more!

Do you want to sell that turbo? I need one for my 97 Powerstroke! lol

Re: Powerstroke 7.3L turbo on 383?

Like mentioned above a blow off valve relieves pressure on the intake side when you let off the gas.
The wastegate opens to relieve gas pressure so you only make the set amount of boost (depending on what size spring is in it)

I have a 9.78:1 383 LT1 in my 87 Iroc. I purchused a Garrett TH08A64 turbo from a detroit diesils semi.

It has a .96 a/r hot side with a T6 flange (u will want with a 383)
.95 cold side
74MM turbine

Also I got it for 330 shipped and it is a brand new rebuild.

Not bad for a big 74MM turbo!

Id ya wanna learn more about turbo's or my build check my thread out a few threads down.

87 iroc LT1 single turbo build

Re: Powerstroke 7.3L turbo on 383?

hes right, a diesel turbo is smaller than a gas one, i was told by a buddy that the biggest turbo he can use is a 70mm maybe a 74mm
