'90 GTA Twin Turbo 305, Headers "Finally" Coming Along....

.... economy has been absolutely horrific, wasn't really any time for me to get the turbo headers wrapped up and ready to go, until now. For those who are familiar with my build, I left off by cutting a factory header (manifold) in half, then flipping it over to run two of the very same manifolds. The drivers side was just finished about two hours ago. There is a pretty substantial amount of work that goes into welding cast iron, but I'm extremely happy with the result. Gonna weld the turbo and wastegate flanges on them next week, then they're off to get ceramic coated. Am already running the $59 code w/the stock 7730, just need to install dual intank pumps. The 305 is in decent condition for it's age, and I'm more than likely going to finish out the season with it because the 355 isn't finished yet. It's coming along though, slowly but surely.

.... this was a mock up on my other Z28 w/the 355 a few months ago, before any welding;

Thanks. Was hoping to somehow maintain the stock GTA's serpentine belt setup, but that is completely out of the question though, and I need to swap to an earlier standard flow waterpump, as well as to the 86's belts and pulleys. Luckily I already have everything....

MAN I LOVE THAT SETUP i wanted to do the samething but i cant weld cast iron. I saw a guy in New Jersey about ten years ago with a similar setup in a 46 mercury 305 tpi.

Good luck with it.

That looks good. What rod did you use to weld the cast iron? Did you do a pre-heat and post-cool?

Why didn't you cut some holes on the top front of the stock TPI manifolds like 89JYturbo did so you could keep the stock belt setup?

It was brazed with a MIG welder. I didn't like the way the cast iron rod would tend to tinkle as it cooled, and I knew that it meant internal fractures because it is very brittle. For the flanges though, it'll be tigged using nickel rod. I thought about using the stock manifolds at first, but so many were complaining about their lack of flow that I wanted to help compensate a little.

WHO used the truck manidolds flipped like that? I think it positioned the flanges like your modded stockers do no.

Those look pretty good. I wish I had more time to re-do my setup and run something similar so i could keep turbos down lower under the hood but oh well. I have ideas now since doing my build that I'd like to see done but will never happen i guess

Re: '90 GTA Twin Turbo 305, Headers "Finally" Coming Along....

Figured I start on the manifold last night, as I began siamesing the lower runner ports (and only them), as well as cleaning up the intake ports. This was only after a few minutes of work, I just now started on it, and it's coming along very nicely. Should have it finished and cleaned up by the end of the day....;

.... got much more to go with these lower runner ports;

.... and here is a before and after with the intake ports. Still a little bit left to caress, but again, its only been a few minutes worth of work yet;

Before;

.... and after;

Re: '90 GTA Twin Turbo 305, Headers "Finally" Coming Along....

Still waiting for the turbo and wastegate flanges to get here, but in the interim though, I yanked the serpentine setup, and installed the one off of the '86 Z28. Those serpentine brackets are freaking heavy, so I helped save some weight. Also found my coolant leak by removing the serpentine setup, as well as why the car would sometimes give me a no start condition. Had a leaky freeze plug, and the negative battery cable wasn't seated right. Also had to rewire the alternator wiring being that the alternator is now on the other side of the engine, but everything is taken care of, for now. The other TPI setup that I siamesed is finished, and I just started porting the 882 heads (1.94/1.60 8:5.1). The only thing that is staying in this picture is the short block, everything else is getting replaced, and the accessories are getting powder-coated. Just need to remove some more of the stock wiring, as well as re-route the heater core hoses....

.... headers are done, and they're getting ceramic coated. Will have pics of both of them once I get them back, then comes the downpipes. Getting the little things done while I wait, like the oil return location. Was going to use threaded fittings, but I only had brass, but this will work just fine;

Thanks. I took that picture just after the weld, I still have to drill the inner diameter through to open it up some more, but it should equal about -10an when finished. Was going to drill it now, then hit it with some paint afterward, but I had to get everything ready for the Randy Couture fight tonight....
