Re: Another Remote Mount Turbo System

Had to jump in to see what people thought of remote mounted turbos now. Know this is a old post but owell. I've got a 88 iroc that I've been thinking about doing this to. Reason being my buddy has a 02 ss with the 6 speed twin turbos that is a sts system and that thin will slam you in to the seats and hold you there. Only mods to his car other then the turbos is ported heads, new injectors and a cam. This car is got power but he has no track times for it douse he can't get it to hook. So the question is are remote mounted turbos really as bad as mounting them up front? His are tucked way up there no way they could bottom out. Also he is running true duels along with duel returns for the turbos. His oil pump supply's both turbos and dumps the return back in to the passenger side valve cover, with a quick disconnect. Seems as if It works very well. I'd like to do the same setup down the road, but would mounting them up front really make that big of a differents?

Re: Another Remote Mount Turbo System

remote mount systems arent bad, there are just alot of comprimises witht he remote systems
#1 sts kits are hella expensive
#2 the run super small turbines to make up for the loss of turbine efficiancy due to heat loss
#3 more lag then front mounted turbos
#4 there is an oil pump that can fail and cause alot of damaged parts

other then that they have some bonuses

more room in the engine bay
simpler install for the most part
depending on the power level or boost level u dont need an intercooler
they do work pretty good though

honestly if deciding between rear mount and front mount one should look at there hp goals , cost among other things

for ur avg street car that isnt a racer sts kits work just fine, but if u want the most out of a turbo setup go front mount unless there isnt any room to package a front mount turbo system in whatever car/truck

but for the cost of an sts kit if u have some fab skills u can build ur own much better performing kit for less 9 out of 10 times

specially truue if u build ur own rear mount kit

You forgot the most important thing: After the cat means smog-legal. Installing a turbo before the cat on something never offered that way requires the whole Cali EO ordeal.

Unleashed Performance - 810RWHP, Stock Engine, Oil-less Rear Mount, and E85

I've really been considering rear mount after checking out the work and results that these guys are putting out.

The Comp Oil-Less turbo now has over 4k miles on it, with 90% of those miles at 750+ rwhp. The factory engine in our '99 FRC C5 M6 is now at 117k. Factory stock: heads, head bolts, graphite gaskets, rod bolts, etc. The only internal mods are the custom cam, patriot gold valvesprings and pushrods, melling oil pump and LS2 timing chain. Still running E-85, 80lb injectors, twin 255lph walbro's in the tank, BAP, and Snow single nozzle meth kit. Again, this is my daily driver, but it's seen 17-18lbs of boost every day that I've driven it for the last 4,000 miles (all in the name of R&D of course).

Strapped it back on the dyno tonight to see if the FMIC and new WG helped at all. Apparently so. It laid down 840whp/845wtq. This was done on M/T 305/35/18 ET Streets, at 15lbs of air to keep them from spinning on the dyno. So I'm pretty comfortable estimating fwhp at 1000+. Not too bad for a high mileage, rear-mounted, daily driver. Best part is, it gets a little over 30mpg Hwy and averages 21 city on the E-85.

We do have a video of this dyno pull and I'll try to get it posted up as soon as possible. But for now, here's the graph:

Here is a twin-turbo set-up on an LS3 made about 800rwhp:
