Car: 1987 Z28 Convertible Engine: 305 TPI Transmission: 5-speed | There are two choices. If you want a truly bolt-on kit, the only choice is Paxton. I gained 1.1 seconds and 10 mph. It should be noted though, that there seems to be a trend of premature failure of the compressor unit due to the antiquated ball drive system. No other manufacturer uses this system today. It is because of this system that Paxton's SN series supercharger has a redline of 38,000 rpm. Compare this with Vortech's and ATI's 65,000 rpm redline. These figures seem high, but you need to take into consideration pulley diameter and internal step-up ratio. In other words, with Paxton's supplied pulleys, 38,000 supercharger rpm occurs at 4,861 engine rpm. It is because of this inherent design (inability to rev past 38,000 rpm) that you will be limited to 1) producing ~10 psig boost with stock heads and cam or 2) ~6 psig boost with aftermarket heads and/or cam. And more importantly, if you modify your engine to rev higher, you will not be able to do so without overreving the supercharger. This is the reason why I decided to replace my Paxton with ATI.
The other alternative you have is to convert the v-belt system to the 1988 - 92 serpentine system. This is what I did on my '87 which had the v-belt system. This will allow you to go with Vortech or ATI.

I know Willie spun his.
I converted my belt drive to serpentine as well and now I have a vortech.
If your going to supercharge, this is what I would do personally. It requires removing your AC and converting to the later style (if you even want to keep AC. I didnt), because the blower will mount right there.

Not only does it keep belt tension constant as the belt stretches, but it takes only five minutes to replace. How much effort is required to change the power steering belt on the v-belt system? LOTS!! If I knew how much nicer the serpentine system is, I would have converted years ago.
Converting to serpentine requires both serpentine accessory brackets, a new alternator (mounting hole "ear" is in a different position), a new water pump (reverse rotation), a new A/C compressor (different design), and new compressor lines. I believe the air pump is the same, but I did not verify this. The alternator wiring must be lengthened while the A/C compressor wiring must be shorted. Also, the A/C compressor and high pressure switch uses different connectors. Hope this helps.

Is there certain brands or types of items to change this over to serpentine. What Vortech supercharger will work, once this is done?

I initally started with an 87 TPI that had v-belt setups. I purchased the Vortec S/C and haven't had any problems with it. You do have to purchase alot of new equipment though.
With the vortech S/C just goto a parts store and get a new waterpump, alt, air pump, A/C compressor and new new A/C lines if so equipped and idler tensioner and serpentine belt for a 90 camaro with a 350 TPI.
you will have to order the serpentine bracketry from the dealership. I believe it was around $150 alone. It takes about 4 hours to convert over, but you will won't regret it once you do.

Alot of people think just becasue they buy a S/C they will drop a few seconds off their top end. They are the few that are sadely mistaken. It does take time and alot of patience. Just like the folks that throw some NOS (Spray and Play) on. The engine can only handle so much and if it hasn't been setup right. Your playing is short lived.

I had a chip programmer develop a Prom for my set up.
I collected data using a lap top and set it to him. He made the code and I burned it to the Prom.
Took a few runs to get it right!
I am running Willie's set up on my TA.
Engine is recently rebuilt with all forged internals and Al heads.
Original 305 suffered the dreaded crank shaft breakage.
Look at old posts from Willie and Mypontiac for the history of our builds. |

Your gonna want to make sure you have a cam set up for the SC and a high flow fuel pump would be good too.
You will need to add gauges to monitor the fuel pressure, boost and if you have the $$ add a Real Air/Fuel ratio gauge to make sure your not running lean.
Or you could buy mine so I can get a 40 mpg car!

I did the buy cheap and rebuild thing too. Somehow after all the work and cost of materials I was over $10K by the end anyway.
Looking at just the power train, I have a new 350 all forged engine @ $9,300 plus the D-1SC at about $4,000.
So I am figuring at sale price at least $14,500. Have it posted in the classifieds now.
I'm not expecting to get many takers, but the numbers wouldn't allow a sale at any less. |

Might need the specific Body Manual for some of those parts.
Lots better than a Chilton or Haynes manual.
